Ice Class Modifications to Design

    I'm interested in taking Charles Wittholtz's 43' Dragon fishing trawler design and enhancing it for use in Arctic waters (ice class). The design is quite stout as it stands, but any information someone might have regarding additional reinforcements would be appreciated. Thankyou.

    :) Hope your still out there. Here is a copy of the Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules. You can calculate the reinforcements! :D

    Don't just focus on the strength of the hull. Keep the practical / operational aspects in mind as well. Your main concern will be the thickness of the shell plating around the ballast to deep draught area. Heavier plate is usually required in this area. Intermediate ice frames also help. Make your stem bar rectangular - and heavy.

    You must fit a larger sea chest or sea bay. Inlets tend to choke with mush ice at certain times of the year and if you can't get suction for cooling water ......
