40000# with 2800 sqr foot of sail ....guess 28 knots.
i will build it on axles, to be legal, sked is intimidating,
fab everything, mig welders, hydraulic forging hammers,
PACKTOR modems with D.S.P. to guess the data , when
ionosphere cant mirror the lo band R.F. down to earth
a 5000 baud packtor modem is bogus, because path allows
500 baud, the speed up to 5000 can only be done with computers
after the R.F. signal has faded. and then with dynamic fall back
in speed AND compression. When RCV cant copy, it ACK to reduce
speed and the reduce chr set a.k.a. symbol set. Today, no one
reduces the symbol set , except me. s.w. at TX , has a finite symbol
set, your msg MUST be coded from structures, words and phrases
, the RCV radio , has in its database, so RCV can guess, after R.F. signal
has dropped out. PACKTOR 5 ...
Boat can be single handed, masts all rotate together
by rotators below deck, sails furl on boom, all powered
stuff has hand cranks, hand cranks can take power from
honda 125 cc, at 40# ...portable .. masts lift on chain hoists
very long chain links 71 tooth sprockets on ea hoist, but
center boards are lighter, so a line shaft with 60 lb.foot of
torque will lift 6 boards, ea 48 inches wide. b.t.w. packtor modems

Can you post line drawings of the proposed boat? It must be a big one to weigh near 18 long tons.

You'll need more power than I can imagine from 2800 sf of sail to get 28 knots from such a heavy boat.

As far as I know, there are no legal requirements for boats to have axles.

Nor 500K or 5000K baud modems.

At least he spells "planing" correctly, which is a novelty around here ! But I was gone after the first line. And so was he !

Mr. E we colonials have different methods of spelling certain words. Words such as color for instance. UK types insist that it be spelled with the insertion of the letter U. Colour.

The term for a boat supported by dynamic lift is also at variance. If spelled without the letter e following the letter n, it is a word pronounced plan-ing, as if to make plans...............not plane-ing as if to allow the support of a horizontal pressure plane.

Just messing with you Mr. E. I respect your take on spelling words as you see fit.

    Cheers.

Yaay - the thread isnt going to be a major loss after all - we can taunt the colonials :)

If I was on the other side of the debate I would retort

"UK types" ???? You mean the inventors and authority on the language called English ( not USAian )

Oh, and while you are promoting the efficiency of removing the U in Colour, you are advocating adding an E to Planing.

Now, Planing is not the equivalent of PlaNNing by any measure.

And PlanE-ing is not skimming across the water, it is the act of removing wood with a wood Plane.

Mr E's 'take' on spelling is more accurately characterized as Correct !

Good on you Mr E. Your arguments are sound but unenforceable for we hard headed Americans. :)

The thread has been officially hijacked. We may as well have fun with its misguided trajectory.

A boat in rapid motion, is being supported by dynamic pressures. Is it said to be on a plane or on a plan?
A plane, in geometry, is an imaginary surface with no thickness whatever. In fact it is unlikely that any boat will satisfy the meaning of plane in that context.

Then there is the aeroplane. I have spelled the word in deference to the form preferred, nay insisted, by the speakers and writers of "proper" English. I will further acquiesce, below, by spelling a certain unit of weight as the Tonne, not as we yanks prefer; ton.

A ship is heading due east. It displaces 20,000 tonnes. It is moving at 20 knots, approximately 10 meters per second. Now the ship turns about and heads due west at 20 knots. At the west heading the ship will displace less than on the east heading. (5.82 tonnes less) Perhaps our academic types will kick that one around just for fun.

I think what the OP means by "keeping it legal" is that he can build it in his yard if it is on a trailer. likely he is trying to get around some community standards or code enforcement issues. he lives far from the ocean and any large body of water, so local community standards or building codes would not be sympathetic to his wish to build a boat in his back yard. If it is on a trailer, likely there is nothing they can do about it.
