Hull turned over yesterday afternoon so herewith some new pictures... Only a short week as Monday, everyone was giving birth for "Labour Day".

Stan, go to the link for boboramdesign, it is there - I am eliminating a lot of "unnecessary stuff", and going for the forward cockpit variation and the forward berths will be for genset and storage...

One reason to go for Bobs design rather than try to do my own design - to many engineering problems to sort - why reinvent the wheel when Bobs design is so good.... Also torqeedo drives - subject to satisfactory performance on Niel B's 44C... A hitch-hiker twin genoa on roller/reefers masthead rig, and up to 10KW of solar panels - theoretically, on a hot sunny day I could motor-sail with the engines at half throttle - add 90kg of thrust to sail alone performance...

 

Hadn't heard of the Torqeedo drives before, so I've been googling. It'll be interesting to see how Neil's trial goes. I cannot find any info on the length of the leg, eg distance between the transom mount and prop centre. Masalai, do you have this figure? I presume you are looking at the Cruise 4.0 R model.

Nice and helpful fellow - but product line seems fairly new from memory two options around 60cm and the 4.0 R has a reported 97kg of thrust. Hi sean, a 10kva kubota based 48v genset set up near the anchor chain locker - forward, charges 2 banks of batteries under each aft berth and the 18kg torqeedo electric "outboards" sit aft in the bridgedeck tunnel - all are designed to be removed for major work and do not go in till fit-out stage, galley is almost domestic in power needs but selected for at least 6 star efficiency rating - the 85l fridge or freezer draws about 300w - 2 or 3 of them - a 2 plate electric hotplate and the list goes on...

Epoxy poisioning

Great thread.

I am in process of researching info for a future build of a crusing cat and gathering info and came across your project.

Note your health issue and wonder if it was related to using epoxy resin. seems some react quite badely to exposure. That is main reason Dereck Kelsall does not recommend it. It is much safer with infusion techniques.

I note you also worked managing plantations near Rabaul, PNG. My best man was Bill Clift who did similar work outside Rabaul. He still works up there today.

Once my cat is built and not by me, 3 years away I intend to cruise and dive PNG extensively.

Keep up the good work. You are not wasting any time.

 

Very impressive rate of speed of construction going on here. Mind you the hull soon seems to come about. It will seem like ages getting the finishing touches in.

I love the smell of epoxy,-- and fibreglass resin,-- and antifouling all mixed up with deisel and dead fish.

They should market that smell, Ille have a dab under the arms anyday.

 

Hi Downunder, I feel it would be difficult to improve on the Bob Oram designs and support. I should be on the water within a year (I hope and wish - as well as intend, all things being near to as planned)...

Not much visually to report today, bum reinforced and glassed, bogging, fairing and chocolate paint and protective black plastic wrapping (against accidental paint/epoxy etc droppings) applied will see the start on the starboard side mid next week. Monday something may see some images of the pretty chocolate coloured anti-fouling.

Sanctuary Cove boat show on Thursday or Friday (Have a medical appointment with the specialist Thursday early) to get pricing and look over some stuff I will find on show.

I am still searching for a marinised new kubota 722cc or 902cc 3 cyl diesel with a Polar-Power or Fischer-Panda generator delivering 8kW+ to charge 48v battery bank (an ideal - but what else is there?)

As a remote Plantation Manager one does not get around much - socialising tends to be with adjacent plantation owners etc... and I like the "quiet life"... PNG is still a really beautiful place as is Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, but many areas are not really safe for western lifestyles and women (particularly in the remote Highlands) fluency in Tok-Pisin is a real advantage as well as a good understanding of cultural behaviour and dress...

I can recommend the "escorted" Louisades annual expedition from Yorkies (Cairns) and back.

Frosty, is it not time that you considered an upgrade to say a Bob Oram 44'C stretched to 46ft? - - My build site will become available in early 2010 - can be modified (underwater lines) to be power only, as I know you are too old to sail?

Bloody typo's... I am working on the perfect sails, I am in the process of training some "bird-catching-spiders" to spin the sails for me and to obey voice commands so if we are ever attacked by pirates I just have to tell them dinner is coming and to attack the pirates and roll them into a "mummy-sack" and hang for their larder - I reckon the boat will look pretty scary too - so we may actually have to go and chase some pirates... - - luckily, as a spirit being, the spiders are not interested in eating me -

masalai is the PNG word for ghost... and "the Phantom" has been done to death and is a boring name - besides "Mr Walker - the Ghost who walks", is not a ghost... Erk! 50000 or so references to "masalai" in google - I'll have to change my name.... Any suggestions? and I have thought of and rejected - ******, ********, and many similar references which are also over-used?
