It would be nice if solar panels could be made in flexible thin sheets which could then be incorporated onto the sail cloth, perhaps receptive to light from both windward and leeward faces.

There are already some flexible pv on the market, but not THAT flexible.

 

I'm back and after trawling through patents and journals I have come up with a couple of ideas and answers.
Answers no you cant bend a solar panel since they have to collect and concentrate energy, but you can miniaturize them into smaller cells. Yes, a solar sail is viable but it won't catch the sun at the optimum level. Rather you have to angle them to catch the sun at a certain angle to maximize energy production.
To power a practical applications moderately sized boat solely on renewable energy is complete impossible at this point due to our current level of energy density, so I have come up with a new focus find new ways to make renewable energy more prominent in boat operation and maximize its use without compromising the boat's efficiency severely, so that it's is more trouble than it's worth. (Couldn't find a way to say that educated.)

The new innovations By DIM and made first by DIM: (I have documentation and witness signatures)
1. Renewable energy will provide a continuous energy supply for the boat when it is either out of fuel in an emergency, or for when it is cruising at slow speeds.
2. (Not by me) Renewable energy will maintain all non-power heavy equipment as the primary energy source (fridge, lights, radar, slow speeds, desalination, comm., etc.)
3. Solar Shell (speculative)- is a retractable partial circular dome (more like an oval) that covers 2/3 or less of are deck of the boat, and receives solar energy at the most maximum level. (of course the weight, and other things present a problem, but I'm still working that out.)

Simple one, Feedback?

Next, how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Finally, Do any off you think I could mount a wind turbine on a boat?

whats wrong with a good ol' sail? gets you anywhere you want since at least 4000BCE. R&D is pretty much done, you just have to build a good commercial sailor.
