well for a mercruiser that would be bellows adhesive from Merc
nothing required on the raw water hose except make sure it is exactly the correct length

If the pipe where the water hose attaches to is a bit rough, soft setting gasket sealer works well.

    bellows adhesive

thanks for your reply ,many of my boating friends seem to have hoses poping off either not tight or too much vibration transfered to the joint causing them to work loose , just recently a friend 3 miles out realised that the boat was a bit slow looked in the engine compartment water was half way up the engine he put on two bulge pumps an headed back to harbour phoned ahead to a mate who put his trailer in the water he just got back straight onto the trailer , but they could not pull it out as it was too heavy he had to wait for the pumps to graduly shift the water making it lighter until he could get it on dry land , the alternator starter were shot and wiring needed attention , it was the raw water out hose came off and was filling up the boat , he was lucky to get back, took ten minutes to put the hose on but several hundred to replace the damaged stuff.
    many thanks

A hose fitting should have a barb,in other parts of the world they call it a nipple. If you fit a rubber hose on a straight pipe it will come off. On cars N stuff this is ok but on your boat is is not ok for the reasons you have experienced.

At least use two st steel clamps and why did you not have a sea cock. Thats what it is for. You were lucky this time.

The U-joint bellows collar has a groove and the bellows have a ridge. They must be in place or it will leak or come loose.
