Warning: flak from the usual suspects is to be expected against biomimetic proposals.

Has anybody here considered/tried filament-winding segments of elliptic hyperboloids (low eccentricity, wide flanges) and gluing them together to make a mast?
Advantages would include fewer constraints for construction, catastrophic failures would be local, and replacement parts or even full masts can be trivially stored on board.

I grew bambusa oldhamii for the purpose of making masts and spars but they just didn't hold up well to the weather. When it splits it is razor sharp and can mess you up.
A spiral wound bird's mouth mast would probably do well.

Warning: Useless ramblings based on seemingly impressive phrases found on the internet are to follow. No reality is applied or implied here so don't consume too much of your intellectual energy considering these engineering concepts that serve only as a form of self titillation for its advocate.

Biomimetic materials are materials developed using inspiration from nature.

How are "elliptic hyperboloids" Biomimetic ?
