The 6Lp is 2 valve head and is 250HP, the others are 4 valve head and 300+

The 300 4 valve engines are a big problem and Yanmar is covering engine replacements for owners. Look up on the internet.

Did you know they are Toyota engines from the Landcruiser?

You are only Considering the 6LP?

First of all you need to be sure what you are going to do and then do it.

There is a point that a job is non reversible.

You got to cut that keel out first and you could really do with the engine to make measurements. I would'nt cut all of it out, just the bit that has to.

Get the engine positioned where you want it and start making some mounts.

Then you are about at the point of no return. Remove old legs, cut new one, mate up.

Then its a case of tidying up.

The Yanmar has its own impellor pump, and needs a good supply of water. Dont restrict the exhaust too much, use a straight through, not too noisy being a turbo.

The engine I'm considering is a 6LPA-STE, 24 valve, six cylinder that is rated at 315hp. It is an older, mechanical engine that has been reconditioned. What is the problem with the engine; this is the first I've heard of any problems. I have heard nothing but good things about Yanmar. Please enlighten me!

I am also aware that there is a 6LY that is rated at 315hp. What do you know of this engine? Can it be used with a sterndrive?

Phew you ask ME that. Take a look at my thread "Yanmars are crap"

ALL the 300HP 24valve engines drop valves--every one. Thats very very likely your is a rebuilt one.

I would'nt let you give it to me.

Google Yanmar 6LP valve problem and stand back.

Ille do it too so I can see what you get.

Water in and out is done by the sterndrive. The inner transom plate supports the back of the engine, for the front you must glass in two large wooden wedges to form a transverse engine bed. That also reinforces the keel area where you removed the keel strengthener.
Of course you must be certain about the engine you are going to use, so there will be space for the oil pan.

    Piperca,

I never got an email from you. Perhaps caught up in the spam.

    Ian,

No worries! I was just looking for an update and an explanation of how you tackled your project.
