modern hull shape

    Stepped planing hulls are not a new idea, but really only come into their own at break-neck sort of speeds, flying boats are one application where the idea was popular, largely because they need to be going at a good clip to get airborne, and anything that reduces the drag makes getting airborne easier, and over less distance. The idea rests upon the ability to reduce wetted hull area.

    As Mr Efficiency says, they are not a new idea and almost de rigueur for Gold Cup boats of the 1920's. See these two threads.
