Those ocean crossing races are all downwind and downcurrent. They probably drift as much as they row.

... 3. Why do you insist on monohulls? With the Polynesian double canoe, the stability problem is solved. For human propulsion the hull shape should be as rounded as possible to reduce surface area. For sailing you need more hull stability. I am thinking of using removable, inflatable outrigger(s).

When you said 'modern viking ship', I assumed you meant monohul.

But if you want to go multi, a double outrigger would do fine.

It would enable greater sail area (SA) per weight.

I myself would consider a single-outrigger with some stores in the float. Then I would put all my oars on the side facing the outrigger, or maybe most of them there.

The real problem would be sleeping arrangements for the crew. I figured that by the time I provided berths for half the crew, I would need enough Beam to make a monohull feasible.

Are we going to a Viking/Polynesian hybrid? Perhaps they can wear horned brass helmets while dancing the hula.
