kind of an off the wall question but still relevant. What must the latitude be to be recognized as a circumnavigation? technically, if you sailed around antarctica, you have circumnavigated the globe.

Paul the deal is that you cross the equator twice

i wont critize the Ozzies because they are ok with just popping up and down to the equator and then around, definately shorter
my preference is start anywhere, go up to 50 deg North and then down and around

the first were done from Britian and France, down to Cape Town, below NZ, around The Horn, and back up home

Besides crossing the equator, you are generally expected to pass through two antipodes. From near Brest, France and just south of Stewart Island, New Zealand work and are common ones.

they get my respect no matter what route they take. I was just curious as to what conditions must be satisfied to get your name on the around the world recognition. I was thinking of a trivial pursuit question which asks, "If you sailed due east from Cape Horn, what would be the first land you would come to?"

as near as I can tell, if you follow the south 55th parallel around the globe and did not vary one bit, you would sail from Cape horn and the first land mass encounterd would in fact be Cape Horn.

But to give Capt Vimes his due credit, you would pass within sight of South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands.

This is really splitting hairs, but it is a good trivial pursuit question.
