@BlueBell ’s advice. But to answer their questions, I guess yes. I would question a proven aircraft design, or at least question if I am using it as intended. And I would definitely question a boat design lol. So I figured why not try my own design. Perhaps buying a design to take the guess work and questions out of the equation would defeat the purpose for me. And I thought this was boatdesign.net, not buysomeoneelsesboatplans.net
I have a ton of notes but I’ll try to keep it short. Relofted the design to have slightly more curve (7 inches) and the final width is 49 inches and a depth of 22 inches (intending to notch the transom)
Did a little bait and switch but y’all are just gonna have to live with it. I’m not using wood. Feel free to talk s#it but I am doing 90% of this hull out of UV cured composite for literally no reason. I’m not trying to pedal the product myself but it looked really interesting on paper (infinite work life, ~8minute cure time, ~40+ ksi of compression strength)
started out making flat GFRP panels (seriously should have just scarfed wood panels lmao). The skins are ~.160 in thick. This was a ton of work and ended up being more expensive cuz of consumables and labor but I got the fiberglass from a friend for a bargain.
then cut out the templates and stitch and glue. I used a jig saw with a diamond tile blade. Worked like a charm. I’m at the stitching step after locating/aligning my frames.
Radio has been silent cuz committing on a project is a big step and I didn’t need any more negative voices than my own because it’s been a ton of work to get to this point and the approach really didn’t make sense at times. Had to shut up and trust the process and only feel comfortable sharing now that I am confident it’s going to work. Seriously just use wood.
here’s some pictures of the process. I used a product called Sunrez 7311, which is a vinyl ester based methacrylate resin.
next step for me is to line up the chine and then fillet with some thickened adhesive. Will laminate the chines and transom before flipping over and finishing the inside.
The gunnel is going to be a timber rub rail on the outside and a timber piece on the inside that is offset for a hand rail. Let me know if you want more pictures of the process.
