Does adding tint to a resin mix do anything for the performance of the resin.

I mean does it stick the same go off the same, exactly the same.

Can you add too much tint and how much tint do you add.

I like to add a bit if tint --saves painting.

Gooday my 'pip' fiend he he . So let's start - W the F would I nose - hey.

You're going to get a whole lot of really 'great' info - especially from a very few - who know everything - just ask them.

1 to 4% (5% is OK) just to keep it safe - is fine - & all resins - are formulated to accept that much 'dye' - pigment - tint - - they are all different - by chemical definition & by dictionary - - but they do a similar job. "same-be-same' in 1-talk language, eh .

So - - simple answer is YES

    Complicated answer is YES

Make sure they are mixed into the resin very thoroughly prior to adding the hardening agent & ALL WILL BE WELL.

    Ciao, mate - james

Most pigments are metallic oxides, and some can do funny things, especially in polyester resins. But if you stick to polyester based tinting pastes, all should be fine, even up to 10% or so. (gelcoats usually have up to 10% or sometimes even more pigment loading)

:eek:long long time ago in a land far far away from here i used NERO ZAPPON dye in polyester resin that was interesting to use was for the see through vent covers in a caravan . My son used it with clear spraying laquare and the effects were memorable thats for sure ,
Pigments are ok just as long as they are powders and mix with a little acetone to disolve and then mix with your resin !! As long as has no moisture shouldnt be a problem !!:p

Its not powder tunnels it comes in a small yoghurt type tub for about 1 dollar 50 and it is as thick as treacle. It seems to work ok and is for tinting fibre glass resin . I just wondered if it detracted from its original performance in any way.

It surprising how little is required to make a good strong white mix.

For a coffee cup of resin half a tea spoon of tint would be enough.

Im only glassing out a new floor in the batt box and it saves painting.

Is it exactly the same....no....will it make much a difference in small amounts...no.

Many compaines pigment their resin for the same reason.

Adding pigment paste will normally slow the gel time slightly and change the viscosity. When tinting gel coat we add all the pigments and then adjust it to the required spec. Some pigments affect these properties more than others due to the volume needed to get the color right, at times the gel time can be slowed a great deal and affect the final cure.

Calcium carbonate won't make the resin as white as standard opaque white pigment. This picture is from polymerproducts who sell pigments and calcium carbonate on ebay which they sell as a filler to add opacity and other properties, not as a pigment itself. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220513516394

Yes, Titanium is what's used to make Gel coat and most paints white, there are many different types and grades though, so to say this is the exact product that would be used when making gel coat would be difficult to do. After saying that, it would probably work fine. Adding 10% is the low end for a gel coat, the hide may not be good and it may not make it a bright white, 20% is the upper end and it can start to cause problems around that point, less if other pigments added too.
