Do you expect me to know everything ? ? ? - - - - - - - Fry from the 'FUTURAMA' cartoon had intestinal worms and got rid of them by giving the worms a tumour, but in USA phonetically spelt it may have been a "2ma" whatever that is... :D  :D

I've got the "new" ipad (3) and I'ts pretty neat, also for boat usage. I don't have a fancy hifi stereo like Manie but connect a speaker to the ipad to listen to music (Spotify with offline content) while sailing. Also use it as "boat cinema" with downloaded movies from iTunes to pass time in the evenings. Wifi-model, I use my (android) phone as wireless modem when I need internet connection. It's not perfect, but iOS6 this fall will bring a lot of improvements.

Should be nice. Sort of similar to what Sven Yrvind is doing, right? (Altough he'll have 2 of them).

But this rig can't be beaten for beauty, and fairly easy to manage as well on a trailer sailer it seems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcM4XrwDsXQ

Joe, can you use the darn thing while it is on charge from a 12V battery or not ?

I think Manie's "hi-fi" is a car radio. The stuff you get from the east is un be lievable. Mine even has a Tv built in, you can play a veriety of formats and it even has a camera input for when you reverse the boat as well as a security thing in Sic Africa as well as a video output for a bigger screen. One of the models comes with a GPS too.

By switching between camera's I can theoretically sail the boat from inside the hull without any outside view :p Like when its a bit too windy

It would be fantastic if you okes can convince Apple to provide an output port. Like the compass for instance you can then use with your auto-steering.

If Im not mistaken, he has a serious Mark Levinson reference system: pre and main amplifiers with Theta disc "transport/player" and Sonus Faber tower speaker system that goes into Fargo

Livingston was the chap who mowed a path from Kairo to Rhodesia with his Rolux Magnum lawn mower if I remember history right.... Right ?

It seems you can use the IPad continuous with the right charger.

Questions Manie or any one else using these marine functions/maps.
Can you enter location points ?
Can it give you a return path or route ?
Can you plot a route into it ?

Confused  - PocketShip is a 15-foot gaff-rigged yacht, not "BALANCED LUG SAIL " as Manie stresses.

    Helloooo ;)

    Thanks for the link MoeJoe

As for my HI-FI - it is a standard LG auto unit "cheapy" that I got one a sale 2 years ago (ZAR 1.1K) What has impressed me is that it really works well. It has a 3.5mm "earphone" jack and a USB port in the FRONT

Now regarding the reflective screen, you only really notice it in the first week, once you get used to the device it very seldom becomes an issue. You simply turn it away at an angle OR you set the screen brighter.
Very important is with the "sweep" function, it is easy to enlarge and zoom in - so you can always see well WITHOUT your glasses.

Everybody has different requirements, but the "sailors" apps that are available completely overshadow the "shortcomings" of the device, I shudder to think what a Raymarine would cost with all these functions.

Last night I started reading on "First Aid" apps for my phone - good grief it is unbelievable. It is like having a Doctor in your hand. There are so many that I dont know which one to choose, so I am working my way thru them. They are all excellent but I prefer the ones with the pretty nurses that speak in a come to bed voice, when she gives you instructions.
I mean sheeet if I am going to do "first aid" on myself or whoever I might as well have a pretty and sexy nurse talking me thru it. :D
AND it only costs ONE DOLLAR - for crying out loud - Steve Jobs WAS a man with vision.

So anyway back to the nurse, I am just looking for the part where she tells me to rub cream on sunburn - oooooooh its sooooore :p
AND the Google street view works like a bomb, fantastic to take a walk down the beach front (ANYWHERE) when you feel miserable.

So back to my boat - I spent the whole weekend pulling wire :p jeez this installation of mine has wires all over - dozens - but I am laying them neatly and dont want loose stuff visible and/or swinging around.

    yes
    yes
    yes AND much much more

ok I have got to go and work now
tonite I will continue my search for a first aid nurse

For most problems there's a solution, and definately for this one, just google "iPad Anti-Glare Screen Protector" or head to the nearest shop that sells Apple stuff.

Well I stopped my nonsense and took a serious look at this "first aid" story
I installed a thing called Virtual Doctor which is only available to Apple AND FREE

well folks this is just mindblowing - it makes encyclopeadia britannica look like marvel comics - to work thru it all would take a month of sundays (which I am simply not interested in)

so now I am going to work on my boat - this phone and computer nonsense has no end (sorry no pretty nurse)
time for a beer and sniff some epoxy :D

I get the feeling you're not going to be rubbing cream only on sunburnt areas...

Guys this is an interesting development.
It is an AIS unit that transmits to the iPhone or iPad.
In South Africa it sells for ZAR 4700.00 incl VAT and shipping to Pretoria. (US$ 587.00) Sold by Global Marine in Cape Town.

What do you guys think of it?
I think this kind of stuff is great because eventually you could have a Radar that would link to an iPad.
This could save the small boater a lot of money.

I would like to think that this kind of equipment is great for the amateur boater that uses his boat on some weekends and holidays - mostly in summer. Raymarine and all the other "professional" equipment is all very good and tested with a wonderful track record and is fantastic for regular and "commercial" use BUT VERY EXPENSIVE.

We are starting to see inexpensive equipment (with a limilted lifespan) that would outlast the average boater anyway. In my neck of the woods there are Raymarine plotters that are 10 years old - in brand new condition - that have worked maybe 20 hours total - BUT IS REDUNDANT old systems that are history.

So what do you guys think of this lot ?
