I can vouch for that  Seen Manie's wonder gadget in action and it is fantastic, especial coming into the marine at night and true about all the other actions he claims for that - seen it performing:cool:

The problem I see Manie, what happens when the Apple drops in the drink:confused::?:

Hoyt thanks for the PM all good.

    Wynand
you should not run around pissed like I do with the phone in your hand
it must be on a holder like I have on my boat, inside the cabin and out of the weather;) it can handle wet hands no problem.

Fanie just for the sake of clariry (not trying to get clever) lets just clarify the "machines"
There are 3 types - Ipod - Iphone - IPad
IPod is a music machine - store zillions of songs in the palm of your hand
IPhone is the wonder machine that does it ALL
IPad is the same thing as the phone with a BIG screen but without the phone funtionality. It is like a laptop with constant 3G internet (or wifi)
All these devices connect to just about everything via a USB cable or a 3.5mm earphone jack. I connect to my old computer via the "earphone" socket to my car radio socket "input"

The phone is fantastic because in a small handheld unit you have everything.
The IPad that you are refering to is great because of the big screen.
Apple were wide awake when they did their homework, they secured many deals for "software" and the important one for me is Navionics marine charts.
These charts ONLY WORK on IPhone and IPad. Now this is not a bad thing because all the other stuff will become "unnecessary"
I saw a YouTube video of where the guys mounted an IPad on the controls of small aeroplane and flew all over America - simply unbelievable. There were one or two issues that the standard "Aero" stuff was better but the IPad came in at 10% of the costs including "software" = apps

What Wynand is refering to is that we left the restaurant at Bayshore way too late after "lunch" and it was getting dark. We had to get across the dam to Dick Manten harbor. Freezing cold, dark and windy on a new boat that we are unfamiliar with. And needless to say everybody had a couple of drinks.
It is like magic that you have proper Navionics nautical maps and GPS and google earth in the palm of your hand. I was entering the pitch black dark harbor with 100% DAYLIGHT vision in my hand. It like frikken magic. It was better than night vision goggles.

So back to the IPad - it does it all with a BIG SCREEN - just use your old phone to phone mommy. And the IPad is half the price of a IPhone.

Over the years I have learned that if a device works properly you should be able to download as much **** as you like WITHOUT EVER compromising the intergrity of your computer or systems. I use AVG and my firewalls funtion properly. My email address is now about flippen 20 years old and still ok. No nonsense no problems. The only thing is, I win the British lottery about 3 times a day.
Now the IPhone can handle ALL THE CRAP I throw at it.
My attitude was if its going to fail it must do it now and I will go back to Nokia.
Please believe me the IPhone 4S is a serious piece of kit with a good camera.

The sad part about it all is, as I am getting older I spend more time on navigation programs than ****, it is sheeeet when your priorities change jeez :p

These Navionics marine charts sound very cool Manie, I'm not aware of any other phone that have them available. The garmin "GPS" we have refuse to draw maps in the sea, what a damn neusense thing.

    Night goggles eh :D
How do you see other boats moored in the dark ?

Manie Manie Manie. And here I am with the expectation that you are this responsible elder leader-in-the-community gentleman to look up to as an example of stability and honesty. I have only one question regarding this sudden shock that was revealed so suddenly...
Can we swap some files !

Just kiddin, what you do in your privacy is non of my business. In fact I'm not even going to ask how big a drive I must get :D

What reall bothers me is how do these sites know you need an enlargement every week :p Not that I need it you know, I can still find it sometimes ;)

    Mas that is good news.
Just for info I will work on the mast and sails once I have done the river ramble. This Vaal river section around the Vaal Triangle holds many dear memories for me from my young days. This is where we did all the barefoot waterski-ing around 1975 to 1980. Those were good days, young, strong and fit. So I just want to do the weeks camping trip for old times sake.

Regarding the mast and sails. Because money is tight and this kind of stuff is insanely expensive in this country, I am going to do it all myself. Definately the balanced lug sail and to start with an 100 dia anodised aluminium tube for a mast. I want a sail for moderate conditions. So I will make sure that I can reef the sail down to a tiny little square. The idea is not to break records or the bank. I have bought most of the stuff already. The alum pipe will be here next month. The sail will be sewn by a local "canvas" company.
I will then hand sew the "fittings" onto the sail.
The idea is to be able to sail and save fuel when possible.
The sailing community has forgotten what "basic" sailing is all about.
Here is an excelent video of fantastic sailing in the PNG with "basics"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5n_UV9IDTQ

what gives me the screaming sheeeets is all old the old farts at the yot club that cant internet, dont understand computers, cant work modern phones, and when I tell the old farts that you can SAIL with a plastic sheet and some bamboo they say it cant be done - you know the old "marconi" stupid argument.
Well watch this video then go to PNG and tell them bees cant fly :p

PLEASE TAKE NOTE - BALANCED LUG SAIL !!

Manie I have an industrial sowing machine, stitching by hand... really I'm not so sure about that ! The biggest challange using it to move all the sh3t around it away so one can actually work there. Oh, and it'a a bit fast for me, but I guess one gets used to make things quicker...

Which one do you have ? I just read a review on the IPad 3 and one of it's drawbacks was indicated that you cannot operate it while it's charging.

    Main disadvantages
•iTunes still required for uploading most of the content
    •Reflective screen struggles outdoors
•Same CPU as the iPad 2
•Heavier and thicker than the iPad 2
•No Flash support in the web browser
    •No standard USB port
    •Non replaceable battery
    •No stereo loudspeakers
•No GPS receiver in the Wi-Fi version
    •No memory card slot
    •No Siri
•Can get uncomfortably hot at times
    No charging while in use
•Lack of basic iOS apps - weather, stocks, clock, calculator, voice memos

Mone is a two, three coming.

There are plenty of apps, free and small subscription for weather, charts etc. plenty of calendars, agree I am yet to find one as good as outlook but hey it is faster, more reliable, portable, fantastic screen (even in daylight) inbuilt GPS Etc.

Several chart software options (I use Isailor) but navionics and several others available. No card slot, and? You can use an adaptor to transfer photos back and forth easily.

No stereo speakers? How will I cope.... Perhaps just plug some stereo speakers in to the headphone socket!

Itunes is not required, at all. You can transfer files via email or download direct, yes Itunes is required to update the operating system, but unlike microsoft products that doesn't need to be done daily!

I use a combination of itunes, cloud and email to transfer easy peasy.

Flash browser support is available but not in the standard safari, there are browsers you can get that will support flash.

With the wide acceptance of ipads there will be changes to websites to make them more ipad and portable friendly.

I use a pc for work, in conjunction with the ipad, always been a pc user but my patience is wearing thin after running the ipad.

It is great to have a device that just works, doesn't need constant updates and is fast. Yes there are limits but like anything you learn to work with them

    Reflective screen struggles outdoors

That is the major drawback and idiocy - Great for troglodytes and ladies or queers putting make-up on, or checking their coif on its "bright crystal" mirror posing as a screen to display stuff - Stupid - - IT REFLECTS your ugly mug, , , but to use under the shade of a tree - A total waste of money - and most cameras and laptops are similarly handicapped - Who is the fool of an idiot who made that a standard feature - Certifiable as the village idiot...

To me the charging while in operation is rather impartant, can't park the boat "somewhere" half way if the batteries die on day one and have to wait for it to charge first... How's the "anchor drag" alarm going to work for one

Hey Mas, some okes like to look at themselves. It's not really important that the thing does anything as long as it creates the impression that it does. Many eh eh eh philamons talk om mobile phones but the thing is as dead as doornails. It's the impression that counts.
It's not really meant as an outdoor thing, so shade it. Here in Sic Africa the sun is going to burn it to pieces if you leave it outdoors. Why do you think Manie looks like he does... and he's only 26 !

We have a "live one" in PNG - - A politician who failed to get re-elected recently, Name of Mr Bart Philemon... http://www.postcourier.com.pg/20120628/news04.htm Now if he moved to Australia - he may have a good chance of getting elected as we have lots of Mr Philemons here - - You and Manie should feel "right at home". . :D :D :D - - - Not many Australians are likely to get brain tumours either as no batteries in the phones and no brains to become a tumour all for posing as they have HUGE phone bills too.....
