Why would I want a scolding hot hunk of rock, particularly in that portion of the world, when I could by a nicely forested chunk of island in the Florida Keys? I know a a few nice ones, most with mainland electricity, some with water too, for just a few million. The best part is I can let the women wear whatever they like and even cuss if they want, without having their tongues cut out.

I doubt cutting their tongues out would work, anyway. You'd have to go for the vocal cords, if you want peace and quiet. :D

Just kidding, folks; never could resist a good straight line. Hold the hate mail....

I read that the new island is belching poison gas.

Bear in mind, most volcanic eruptions bring important minerals to the surface. You may be looking at gold, silver deposits or at the very least, some excellent top dressing for the vegie garden.

Actually most volcanic islands are just mud and silt. These wash away in a few years. This island appears to be like this, as most are, unlike the molten rock flows that reach the water in various active areas around the world, Hawaii most notably. These usually aren't islands so much, as a continuation of the mother land mass, forming a peninsula.

Crows Nest Island, up for auction, with starting bids at 90k. Utilities in place, 1 acre above water, about 70 below as marsh. Deep water to the gulf.

Pretty Joe Rock is small (1/4 acre), but packed with potential and utilities, for just 1.5 million.

Bay View Island has a land bridge so it's easy to get to and full amenities for only 9 million and it's single acre.

Dolphin Jump Key is a 1/2 acre key 5 minutes from shore for less than 1 million.

Twichell Island is a good deal at 5 million and 2.5 acres. Deep water access to the Atlantic with Stuart Florida minutes away.

Islands can be had, in desirable locations. Only two above are in the keys, with the rest being scattered around the state, but still in sub tropical climates.

The trouble with owning an island is, you get undesirable riff-raff who own boats camping off of the shore and ruining your view.

Maybe in your country, but here in Florida, we can shoot unwanted riff-raff on our property, which does tend to weed out the gene pool a bit.

PAR, what about those anchored 100ft out next to your island, and isn't there some universal exception for 'mariners' coming ashore 'in duress' in that they aren't charged with stuff like immigration/customs violations, at least not until everything gets sorted out all nice and polite after a couple days?

Isn't there some US National law that says beaches are 'public access' and I'd think that includes islands.

    http://www.law.fsu.edu/journals/landuse/vol151/spain1.htm

The way I'm reading it it sounds like "sold in public interest" would only be certain port facilities or utility easements etc.

Dont worry - its only a short while before you can do that to shoreline properties in your very own boat.

Nothing like a junk rig to drive shoreline property prices down :p

Especially with the rigging festooned with the washing and a motley crew of Aussies.

As for PAR's comments re shooting people, one of the advantages of a steel boat and a bit of distance is greater resistance to bullets than one of those flimsy ply/epoxy things. Besides, I have the space, boat mass and ability to mount a couple of 2.5" bore muzzle loading cannon.... as you well know :)
