What are the determing factors in selecting the appropriate sized oil cooler for an inboard transmission? is there a 'standard rule' for the amount of cooling area needed per HP?

    thanks

Usually this is specked by the tranny mfg.

The reason ithere is no STD RULE , is the heat generated by each style of tranny is very different.

WE have a DD 6-71 hooked to a Twin Disc , that is ALL mechanical, so no cooler and only 5 quarts of oil in the tranny total.

Compare this to a hydraulic nightmare that needs 20 quarts of ATF and a good sized cooler.

Only the mfg knows the heat generated by each setup.
Overcooling or undercooling are both bad.

    Sorry,
