Propulsion for Prototype

I’m having design work done for a prototype boat and could use propulsion system opinions. LOA = 30 ft (LWL = 27’), beam 9 ft (BWL = 7.4’), weight est. 5000 lbs w/engine. Design intention is semi-displacement w/hard chine capable of 20-22 or so knots. Prefer inboard power somewhere between 100-200 hp but not sure of diesel vs. gas. Believe an inline 4 to 6 cyl should suffice. Also not sure what type of drive will give the lowest possible (or practical) shaft angle- vert. offset or direct mount v-drive. Need to decide on something to proceed with the design.

 

Use of boat, intended market, desired performance, etc ????

Any particular reason not to use an outboard?

 

In open form a daycruiser/fishing boat. Not yet determined if a cabin structure is feasible. Design is similar to one made in the 1980's by Bill Tritt. A few of those were produced in FL with inboards. Intended market is not specific as yet but semi-displacement speed puts it broadly in that category. I see it as a potentially good boat in a bay chop. Not discounting other forms of propulsion entirely- an outboard on a bracket would certainly work- but engine weight located in the boat may help it float on its lines and better place LCG. Not really a planing boat- chines touch water at Sta 5. Forward half is a vee, aft half becomes pretty flat. Intention is basically a comfortable cruising form. Not trying to start a boat company with this- just interested in one prototype to check out the design.
