If you are a designer you will find it difficult. If you are a naval archie, consult the Principles of Naval Architecture book. It is there in single volume edition or the 3 volume edition. The design lane is there and as you read further, loads of design information.

How urgent is it? You can usually get fast information for a price. Or is this a school project and you procrastinated?

You have to define general cargo before anyone can answer you. Ships vary from bulk grain carriers to oil tankers to gas tankers to roro to refrigerated meat etc.
