Longer Cedar strips

Planning a 30 ft boat with cedar strip construction. Would like to make 30+ ft strips. Make the whole thing go faster. Wondering if anyone knows of a woodworking machine that makes the lap joints to glue strips together(length wise).

The common table saw does nicely. Set the straight cut guide about 18" away from the blade. Lay the marked strip against the blade while stopped. Cut a piece of trued, thru a planer, piece of 2 X 6-8-? . Cut it to fill the space between angled wood and straight guide. You can keep the filler strip in place by double sided tape-blocks and C clamps- etc. The wider the filler piece the more strips you can cut at once. You may want to go to a lumber mill and have them cut a tree in RIFT CUT only to get all strips with ALL the correct grain direction for bending the long strips. Just remember to keep all the grains the same or change them as the hull curves dictate them.

 

For a faster job, don't worry about the total length. Cut the strips square and let the buts have at least three planks in between.

 

Gonzo is right, it's not faster to have full length strips, in fact you'll break more then you install, if trying to handle over 30' pieces of cedar. Rip, strip, butt, strip some more and stagger your joints well. This is the fast way and the whole point to this construction method.
