What are the aspects that confuse you Pironiero?

I just watched the video - they appear to have done a good job of building a sailboat from a bare hull.

You did not know that they could build a sailboat from a bare hull?

This is how all boats are built!
The builders appear to be very talented and resourceful, re how they have built almost everything themselves, including all the metalwork like the stanchions and even the frame for the fore hatch.

i meant that i didnt know that you can take an old hull, strip it down, remove old deck and build a new one from scratch and fit it on, is it worth doing?

The Builders must have decided that it was worthwhile to do this, otherwise they would not have embarked on a project like this.

Never underestimate Russians. They are very capable people.
Imagine the money saved on building a hull.

Repurposing an old hull works well.

    Not easy to do.

    No performance promises.

For most people this would not be remotely worthwhile; the cost of the hull is a tiny part of the total cost of the boat. If you want something esoteric and have the time and skills to do it then you can get exactly what you want, but given the tiny cost of ready-to-sail second hand yachts it will rarely make financial sense.

What does financial sense have to do with boat building?

This is saying, and I agree that it is true, that it is cheaper to buy a used boat then to build new. Yet, new construction goes on all the time. If it didn't where would the used boats come from?

If I were building a boat and someone gave me a derelict hull to start with, I'd be grateful. There is a lot of time in designing and constructing molds, as well as laying-up a glass hull. It may seem like a small portion of the cost, but it is still a significant portion.

While I've not done this myself, I have a hard time with the eternal argument that it is more costly to buy a project boat and rebuild. Because it seems that it completely ignores all the work that is already done, like building the hull. Refitting an old boat shouldn't cost any more than refitting a new boat from the same start point. I can, however, see that there is some labor costs associated with deconstruction and repair that maybe is not part of a totally new boat build.

Doing a custom build on an existing hull is vastly more expensive than even short runs of new-build production. As a simple example, building an interior is much easier without a deck moulding in place. The subjects of the video obviously achieved this, but then they had to build a fully custom deck moulding...

I accept that cost is not everything, but there are good reasons why this practice is not widespread.
