Excellent interview by Alan Block with the man behind the Flying Phantom 18 footer and part of the Groupama Team:

    ...

I did some varnishing today and had the computer on the C-Class USTREAM internet broadcast, which often broke up and disconnected, and when the commentary was coming through I did not especially like it.

There were all too many stupid comments about how the C class racing would in one or another way presumably be superior to the America's Cup. It's just too stupid.

In the hour or so I listened there must have been 10 such remarks in connection with their having more teams, or less expensive boats, or more advanced wings, or different wind limits, bla, bla, bla.

If there is one thing I truly detest, it is when one little segment of a small sport is making derogatory remarks about another quite similar segment, by way of trying to gain some new adherents to their little camp.

It is completely the wrong way to build the sport in which both those camps are a part. It is nerdish, mean, and niggling.

The broadcast was on the whole badly done, and having Alan Block feature in so much of it made it no better - there is no-one on the planet more fatuously in love with hearing the sound of his own voice.

Great photo of the fleet, but the course looks a bit weedy.

Block is a prick but without him and SA we'd have zero coverage. Hopefully, they'll get the out of sync audio and other stuff fixed by tomorrow when wind is expected.

To be fair, the actual teams and people involved aren't slagging other classes - that is due to Mr. Block. He seems to be trying to stir the pot instead of just reporting the actions of the people at the table. Fred Eaton and Steve Clark have taken the high road at every intersection - helping other interested people, chartering boats and providing training in both sailing and design.

The broadcast was so poor I turned it off.

Yes, the participants are good interviewees, and they happily reveal things which would be trade secrets among their larger cousins!

    :)

Was foggy again this morning, has just cleared and racing said to start at noon. That French page I linked to earlier has all the interviews and tweets:
