    Hello boatdesign.net friends,

I'm interested in gathering as much info as possible about modern classic sailboats' hull and appendages designs. I am focusing in long overhang, hanging rudder, bulbed keel, 12-15 m length boats.

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Guillermo, Haven't seen you around here in awhile. May I suggest one of my designs that may fit your request, the Scandinavian Cruiser 40. You can see it on my website here:

    http://www.sponbergyachtdesign.com/SC40.htm

This boat has not yet been built, unfortunately, a fallout of the worldwide recession. But its intent was to answer the very proposal you make.

Some of the other boats we saw fitting this description are the following. Note that the first two have long stern overhangs, but plumb bows:

    CCYD 30 (Argentina)
    Wally Nano (Turkey)
    Morris 28 (USA)
    Spirit 46 (UK)
    Friendship 40 (USA)
    Hinckley DS42 (USA)
    Geranium (34', USA)
    Ginger (50', USA)

If you can't find these through a Google search, I have some details on them I would be happy to send you.

Long overhangs are the features that are the most definitive in your description--not too many people or companies make them.

To what purpose are you collecting this information?

    Eric

    Thanks, Eric and Phil.

Eric, I had already seen your beautiful SC40 when searching for information. Your pages are always an inspiration for me :)

I have a prospective client who wants to design and build by himself a modern classic cruising boat, as a retirement project. He just wants my advice and the performing of some calculations along the process. Not my ideal involvement, but business is yet running very slowly over here.

I will check the boats you suggest and be back to you if needed, thank you very much. I had also found this Med 40 design, which seems to be a good approximation to what is intended.

    I'll keep in touch.
    Best wishes.

    For a bit of inspiration on Modern Classics, check out Spirit Yachts and Fairlie Yachts in the UK. Both are building jaw dropping modern classics with foil/bulb keels. There are several great videos to be seen on Youtube, especially a viedo construction diary for a Fairlie 55;

My kind of yachts. Love the classic wooden sloops, brass & bronze hardware, etc.

I would think the W-Class an obvious choice.

    Fairlies are beutiful, but oversized.
I like these......although I find them more "daysailing" oriented than bluewater cruising boats, which is a requisite.

This is a bit big, but it might give you some ideas. If it can be done with a J class, it can probably be done with a 12 meter and smaller boats with the long overhangs designed to similar rules.

F class Firefly. Basically a J class with a fin/bulb keel and high aspect rudder.

After several meetings with the client, we have been finally commited to the design of a pure classic, inspired in the Concordia 39, forgetting about the spade keel + bulb.

Thanks anyhow to all of you for your very kind help.

Congratulations! Will you be designing in wood or perhaps in composite? Post pictures when the design is done and once the boat gets built.
