Costa Concordia wreck to be broken up in Genoa | TRADEWINDS

...It is understood Genoa’s plan is to take the Costa Concordia to the Voltri terminal where, under phase one of the operations, the cruiseship’s internal structure will be removed to reduce the vessel’s draught from its current 18 metres to 15 metres.

From then on, the vessel can be moved alongside a quay where the bridge and other sections of superstructure can be removed, again decreasing the ship’s draught.

In the final phase, when the hull has been reduced to a suitable size, it will be floated into shiprepair facilities to be broken up.

By finally breaking up the hull in a repair dock, Genoa will be able to argue that it is complying with new European regulation on shiprecycling introduced this year...

COSTA CONCORDIA Wreck Removal Update | MARITIME MATTERS

The Saipem/San Giorgio del Porto plan for dismantling and recycling of the Concordia wreck will be carried out in four phases that are expected to last a total of 22 months.

• Phase I: The Port of Genova Voltri will be readied to receive the vessel and perform initial ship breaking activities including stripping of the interior furnishings and fittings on the decks above water.

• Phase II: The wreck will be transferred from the Voltri Breakwater to the Molo Ex Superbacino dock, where the structures of decks 14 to 2 will be dismantled.

• Phase III: Will consist of preparatory activities for transfer of the wreck to Dry Dock no. 4. At this stage the sponsons will be removed and the food storerooms and cold storage rooms on Deck 0 will be cleaned.

• Phase IV: Operations will be carried out in the segregated area of Dry Dock no. 4 with complete disassembly of the wreck, involving removal of the other interior fittings, cleanup of various areas and final demolition of all remaining structures. This phase will conclude with appropriate handling, disposal and recycling of the discarded materials.

How Engineers Will Make the Costa Concordia Float Once Again | WIRED

...If the weather’s good, starting Monday, they will be gradually pumped full of compressed air. That will create enough buoyancy to lift the water-filled, 115,000 ton ship up off the platform.

To start, the engineers will lift the ship two meters, and check it for structural damage. If it’s too badly damaged to move, the ship may have to be dismantled in place...

If the structure checks out, the ship will be moved approximately 30 meters away from shore before the full refloating. Engineers will raise the ship gradually, checking each deck being for toxic substances that could be leaking into the Mediterranean...

More recently, Greenpeace has announced it plans to send its Rainbow Warrior ship to block the removal of the Costa Concordia. Greenpeace Italy spokesperson Luca Lacoboni believes that toxic fluids like oil and diesel could leak into the environment and that nearer Italian ports could be reached “easily and with less risks”.

Costa Concordia Is Re-Floated as Final Journey Begins | NBC NEWS

GIGLIO, Italy - The Costa Concordia was floating again on Monday, thanks to a delicate project aimed at towing the shipwrecked cruise liner to the scrapyard. The vessel -- which went down after hitting rocks off the coast of Italian resort island Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people -- had been raised by more than three feet by 7:30 a.m. ET. Before it can be towed away, the Concordia will have to be raised by about 40 feet.

Thirty giant hollowed steel tanks were fitted to the ship's sides, which were later filled with water. Experts say there is a real risk that the ship's hull will crack open and spill out a toxic soup made of rotten food, chemicals and debris as it is being raised. If the first re-floating is successful, the ship will be moved around 30 yards to the east by tugboats. In the coming days, a pneumatic system will slowly pump the water out of the tanks, creating air pockets that will give the ship buoyancy.

Wrecked cruise liner Costa Concordia begins final voyage | Deutsche Welle

The 300 meter vessel began its journey on Wednesday to a port in Genoa, where it will be broken up for scrap. Sea traffic was around Giglio's port was closed after the arrival of the morning ferry at 8:30 a.m. (6:30 UTC).

A team of four tugboats and several escort ships are towing the rusty hulk of the Costa Concordia to the northern port, where it is due to arrive on Sunday...

The cruise liner will travel at around 3.7 kilometers per hour (2 nautical knots) and a 17-person salvage team will be on the ship for its journey.

Sensors on the side of the ship will monitor possible cracks, while underwater cameras will watch for debris washing out of the vessel amid fears of possible toxic spillage. Free-floating objects like suitcases, clothes and furniture will be caught in a huge net and infrared sensors will detect oil leaks at night...

FWIW, parabuckling and refloating took just slightly longer the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) salvage, mostly because of the lack of winter work and the exposed condition.

A vessel is nothing but a bunch of opinions and compromises held together by the faith of the builders and engineers that they did it correctly. Therefor the only thing a Naval Architect has to sell is his experiences.
