    Captain's qualifications explained. Need a job ?

    Extracted from:

    http://maritimematters.com/2012/01/a-short-history-of-the-costa-concordia/

"Captain Francesco Schettino had been with Costa since 2002 beginning as a safety officer. He was promoted to captain in 2006. This was his first accident. The 52-year old captain comes from Meta di Sorrento, a village with deep maritime traditions. Several cruise and ferry captains hail from there. Captain Schettino was arrested and charged with the serious crimes of causing a shipwreck, manslaughter and abandoning his ship. First officer, Ciro Ambrosio was also placed under arrest. With the rapidly growing size of international cruise fleets and the size ships that make up the bulk of the tonnage, finding enough competent crew to provide good service has been an increasing problem. To a lesser extent, the same holds true for the position of captain. With the smaller fleets of the recent past, it would have been unheard of for a ship master with just over five years experience to be given command of a passenger ship of over 114,000 gross tons. Within the Carnival group, sister company Holland America Line does not have enough Dutch sea captains to man their 15 ship fleet, so has turned to Great Britain for some of their senior officers. Even a few Americans are now finding their way to the top position aboard foreign registered cruise ships. Costa’s 2012 fleet would number 16 ships if the COSTA CONCORDIA were included."

So it is safe to say, Capt Schettino will not be in command of the replacement ship...

    Modern Cruisers

Having learned a hell of a lot about operating modern cruiser vessels in this thread I would like to know and therefore ask for your expertise to this video here:

How will a vessel of the "Costa Concordia" type get along in a sea like that?

Also note it is not built like a skyscraper with absurd number of decks.

that is not the same thing as having a 175 foot long breech adjacent to the engine room either. Not sure there is a design that can tolerate that kind of damage.

That is a much smaller ship, and I believe it lost power, so I believe it just rolling itself to depth. The modern ship as long as it has power and stay facing the wind it is not to bad. I was on a ship similar to Costa ship, the wind was over 60 mph, the furniture was flying off the deck or being blown back a few hundred feet. The swells were over 60 feet, the whole ship was in the hole sometimes. I don't know what would have happen if ship lost power there. The ship itself was comfortable enough at over 900 feet. It oving sideways rather than up and down. Kind of hard to stay on your feet without holding on to something and she was creaking like an old wood boat.

These accidents will continue as long as they rely on Gps etc, this could of been a satellite navigation problem caused by the satellite/satellites, a satellite relaying incorrect data after perhaps a solar flare etc, who knows.
