Largest semi-submersible may lift Concordia

They want to use the Dockwise Vanguard to carry the Costa Concordia ....

Will it work? How long would it take for it to lift that much water up, and let the water drip out of the Concordia?

 

This Vanguard must be a pretty expensive piece of equipment.
I wonder what they use it for when they are not lifting the drowned Concordia. According to the media there must be a 5 ft wooden bed secured to the deck to prevent it from being dented by this heavy load, so I guess it is normally used for other purposes (?)

 

No. It is used for lifting oil field platforms for the North Sea, etc..

I think the bed is to disperse any unexpected 'hot points' of weight, remember this thing is full of water, I don't think you would want a steel beam forced into the deck of the Vanguard by 60 feet of water and ship above it.

We used wood, I didn't think over 4 inches helped spread the load, but we used wood in air transport in the US Army beneath tanks, and other heavy loads. I only got two short loading classes the whole time I was in ... darn it!

 

The really incredible salvage ship is the one that the Dutch ,Smits salvage , constructed in Rotterdam to lift the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk.

Single use , complex and gigantic.

 

What was the name, and do you have a link to more information?

I still think the Concordia will be a feat .... It was bigger than WW2 aircraft carriers .... almost as big as WW2 battleships?

Kursk was a nuclear accident...the sub had to be lifted from deep water.

Impressive feat of engineering.

 

Giant 4 was converted, not purpose built, to lift the Kursk. After lifting and moving the Kursk the Giant 4 was returned to its original configuration. Conversion of the Giant 4 and recovery of the Kursk was included in one of the episodes of National Geographic's Mega Movers.

I remember that smits built a scale model of the Giant , then tank tested the lift.

Smits had a documentry on thier web site but I see that its been taken down

 

My recollection from watching the Mega Movers episode was the Giant 4 was modified by cutting a hole in it and creating a "moon pool". The Kurst was slung under the Giant 4, not lifted onto the deck.
