Laminating Stems

    In one of my earlier canoes (Dora) I attached a thin 5/16") cedar stem cheek inside each sheer plank end which can be seen either side of the 1/4" birch ply stem. It has a small false stem added. In a later canoe I omitted the ply, so the stem on that one is only 5/8" x 3/4" and there is no false stem.

    With construction methods like cedar strip the stems must be more substantial to define and hold the stem shape during construction. If the canoe planks can be shaped accurately without a stem then the fillet sounds adequate.
