Laminate drawings and schedule for 52 ft coastal catamaran

    I already posted the laminate info provided by NA above... As I said... Looking for USEFUL info from others on their laminate for similar sized vessels. Thank you for your very informative comments.

    Is there anyone else with some USEFUL info who might wish to share??

    I can also recommend Nina she gave me some great advise with my new composite 8.5m tri I designed, (also with help from a couple of NA's)

    Another company you could try would be Gurit/High Modulas in Auckland.

    It will be very expensive to get it engineered properly.

    The laminate you have described sounds pretty strong, the main thing to take into account is panel size/stiffness. anything over 1000 grams you can pretty much not break with a hammer...

    My advise is to go as light as possible on the hulls, but make the beams, chainplates, mast step, rudders and centreboards very very strong. The heavier the hulls the higher the loads will be. Nothing worse than a heavy Multihull!!!

    What do you think we're psychic for goodness sake ? You haven't posted one picture or drawing and you want advice on laminates for a 52' !
    This is a serious engineering undertaking not a matter of opinion !
    If you are too stingy to pay for professional advice but would rather follow the opinion of a forum good luck !

    Gonzo, he has a laminate schedule, other wise how was the weight study preformed. He's looking for estimations and guesses, based on hull type and length, which frankly is an absurd question. It's a bit like asking what the average speed of a preformance oriented, 4 passenger car might be, as this is about all we know of his project. We know it's a multi and preformance oriented, plus it's 52' (LOD assumed), but after this, the rest is pure speculation.

    Maybe I'm just part of the peanut gallery, but I've my share of laminate schedules under my belt and I still wouldn't venture to guess at his. He's apparently not satisfied with the schedule he's been supplied with (how does one qualify or justify this) and is looking for ball park guesses, on his 52', preformance oriented mutli schedules! Consider the total outlay for a 52' multi project, he's possably looking to save costs in the very worst location (my assumption). Not to mention he can look up the published reviews of production and custom multi builds in this general size, with their released hull thickness or rough laminate schedules. Most brochures will tell you a basic laminate arrangement, if for no other reason then to brag about how stout it might be, of course details would be guarded (understandably), unless you bought a set of plans.

    So, can someone please them me the general thickness of the cylinder walls, on a preformance oriented, liquid cooled, 3 liter V6?

    I apologize about the "baseless comments" and "peanut gallery" comments fellas... I do realize that without providing the info I have for your review, it is a little tough for anyone to provide useful info. Hence, I am somewhat understanding of the remarks made by some above... I will attempt to put the info up for review when I get in front of a real pc.
    I was merely trying to gather some info before I proceed. Just as anyone who has built something from scratch can probably agree with, there are many different ways of getting the same results.
    As for the engineering of a catamaran, even in that case there is not a definitive way to do it as everything is essentially designed to a safety factor of x, not to the (generally unknown) exact loads.
    Having worked on and repaired many different boats over the years I have clearly seen that there are many different styles and methods of building a boat. All of which are floating today, despite maybe being extreme for there time.
    However my unfamiliarity with dofferent cat builds is why I posted here looking for info.
    Feel free to share what you have seen and know about the subject of cat laminates...

    The boat will be equipped with twin transom hung rudders with tiller steering. Open rear bridge deck cabin house. Rotating Wing mast. Daggerboards.

    ok you got some renderings... these wont help much at all for a laminate schedule, just gives a general idea of your theme which is better than nothing...

    engineering needs numbers...

    do you know the;
    sail area, sail plan?
    rig height and type?
    max heeling moment of the ship?
    what is the beam and or hull centerline spacing dimensions?
    length to beam ratio of the hulls?
    any detail on the centerboard and rudder design?

    The mast on the drawing is about the same length as the boat. Did you cut odd for space? A performance cat will have a much taller rig.

    The study plan above, gives you a full materials list to complete the shell, you can get an idea of ths laminate schedule from this aswell as material cost - it uses balsa core instead of foam however.

    $13k is nothing in the grand scheme of the build which will no doubt set you back something in the order of $300-400k to build the enitre boat, fit it out and rig it, not to mention the 7000man hours of labour... if you beleive $13k isnt worth it on a project this size, then good luck to you...

    In your opinions what other info do i need to obtain from NA who did design to pass on enough info for help with laminate drawings for builders.?

    I have general laminate plan, sailplan, hydrostatic, weight, buoyancy, cg, weight lightship and max. 3dm files containing all the above...
