At 10.30 am on Sunday, May 6, 2007, Launceston sailor Ken Gourlay, 51, cleared customs and quarantine at Devonport (Tasmania) to a big welcome breaking the Australian record for circumnavigating the globe solo, non-stop and unassisted in his yacht Spirit Silver Edition.

An Australian Yachting Federation official is flying to the Island today (Monday) to record the end of Gourlay's circumnavigation.

A spokesman said "Over the last two days he's had strong but favourable winds and he's managed to log around 150 nautical miles per day."

An official welcome for Gourlay is planned in Launceston at 4pm today (Monday.) He started his circumnavigation off the Mersey Bluff in Bass Strait at 4.28pm on Monday, November 6, 2006.

Around $77,000 has now been raised towards his target of $100,000 for the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust which will do eyesight research to aid affected children between seven and 13
