Half way and Spindrift publishes a video looking at IDEC :)
BP5 had a slow day just before cape Horn, it's possible still to get there with options for a new record.

They are nowhere near the cape, the cape horn. Seen the weather after the Cape H.

The weather has stalled and slow.

They are both slowing 24/7 180

What makes you so sure about the intention of Joyon of not braking the record?
I think pushing so hard through the Indian Ocean close to Antarctica near the ice tells an other story.
And choosing the same weather window (and actually making the same routing decisions as Spindrift) would mean that Spindrift is also trying to miss the record.

Well, looking at the wind forecasts, I would turn ESE since they seem to be in a narrow strip of wind which will (believing the models) connect to the large depression in the south east. In the north, I see nothing but low winds for the next few days.
But, as an armchair sailor, I don't know nothing... .

IDEC and Spindrift2 have made the call to head south. A lot of racing skippers note that grib files can only be used as a general guide and are not necessarily accurate on a local level. It's going to be interesting to see how their decision works out. Will the choose to head east again? It will be interesting to see, Spindrift looks to be pretty committed to their southward track.

After spending some time slowed by the soft conditions both IDEC and Spindrift2 have pulled ahead of the existing record ghost of BPV. BPV took a considerable detour to the north perhaps to avoid ice or unfavorable conditions (I cant recall now).

I still don't know nothing, but this detour to the north yesterday could possibly cost the Trophy for Joyon.
Spindrift was in the same weather window as Idec and moved straight along instead of trying to avoid the low wind area. Ok, the low wind capabilities of Idec are not so good as of Spindrift but this is a question of a few knots speed which would have summed up to a loss of maybe 100 nm over the day. But this detour had cost them hundreds of miles, especially as Spindrift barely dropped below 20 knots over the day.
However, there seems to be a difficult zone of low winds just behind Cap Horn which will possibly slow the progress of Spindrift and their lead over Idec.

Spindrift2 has passed the Cape and is heading north quickly leaving IDEC well behind. It looks like IDEC has just recently passed Cape Horn after a number of gybes.

Now it gets interesting: Spindrift has a comfortable lead over Idec, but they are using different route options, so it can be getting closer if the choice of Idec pays out.

And Spindrift has a mast delamination problem. Looks like they've repaired it though, nice work ... if it holds?

Well, almost equal now... . But Spindrift has more wind (although on the nose) and Idec a high pressure area in front which is hardly to avoid.
It remains interesting, as well in the question if the record falls at all.

Well, looks bad in the moment for both contestants with about one or two days behind respectively, but BPV had made a large detour to the west where it made for at least two days almost no miles to the finish line. So, IF they can go the direct route the record may still fall to one of the two boats.

It looks like Spindrift is going to match the route of the record holder and avoid the large strip of high pressure blocking the direct way to the finish by going west.
If the weather models are right, Idec could make some ground on using a different tactic by heading straight to the north and a later decision (on higher probability of the forecast) about the best way to avoid being once again becalmed.
The feasibility of the direct route seems to depend on the ability of the boats to go to windward (with useful VMG) since the trade winds are coming from the North East and especially in surrounding the high in the East will give them wind directly on the nose.
Interesting to see which decisions will be made... .
