I have a 1992 175 hp 2 stroke merc. I bought one year ago. Shortly after we got it we started chasing this issue.
idle--great, wide open-- great 5,000 rpm
When you ease into the throttle and don't go above 2'800 to 3,400 it acts like it runs out of fuel and dies. But if go above 3,400 and stay above that it runs real sweet. When it quits running all we have to do to start again is put it in neutral and turn the key and starts up no problem at all. We have replaced all fuel lines from tank and on the engine. New fuel pump, new fuel filter. Pulled the fuel pick up out of tank and checked that. Checked the compression in all the cylinders.

It has low and high RPM coil system. Get the manual. It is a several step troubleshooting method.
