You can build your boat with just about any plywood that is waterproof. The problem is that construction grade ply has a lot of core voids that is bad news for a boat. Marine grade ply, has fewer core voids than construction grade stuff. The best option, if your budget will allow, is to use ply that has a BS1088 rating. You can get ply of that quality in several different species of wood. If lightness is important then Okumee is appropriate. Okumee does not have the durability of some of the other choices. Meranti is another type that has more durability but it is somewhat heavier. These ply woods typically come in metric sizes. The sheets are essentially four feet by eight feet but the thickness is in millimeters. They have more plies for a given thickness than domestic ply has. You can use fir plywood that is rated as marine grade, but it is heavier, has fewer plies, and is prone to checking. (Checking: after some exposure, the outer ply begins to develope splits or small cracks.) Checking is not common with wood types such as meranti.

Pick up a copy of Wooden Boat magazine and look at some of the classified ads. A number of reliable suppiers will be listed there.
