intermediate housing boot seal to transom

I have a Johnson 17 delux which I am restoring (circa 1964) what is the best sealing compond rubber boot to fiberclass transom. I will need something which will allow me time, about 1 hour, to install 12 machine screws and nuts. I am not a fan of RTV type sealing. Any thoughts. Thanks, Ed

 

Welcome to the forum. Without a better idea of what you're trying to do, answers will be difficult. Can you more accurately describe what you want to do? Is this an outdrive boot? Any photos?

 

Yes,. it is the rubber boot that seals the out drive to the fiberglass transom.I am looking for a sealer which will give me time to install the 12 ss machine screws, washers, lock nuts. regards, Ed

 

Butyl rubber works well, but is messy to work with.

 

There are several bellows adhesives available.



Most marine parts suppliers will have it in stock or you can order it on line. You'll have sufficient setup time, unless you do the job in the rain or a very hot and humid day.

 

I think he might be talking OMC so its bellows to fibreglass?

If it's OMC, it'll use a neoprene seal, which can be used with or without a sealant.



If using a sealant, a good quality polyurethane will work and there will be enough time to install the 22 fasteners, before it skins over.

 

I wonder if its a 2 stroke sterndrive?

The seal I've shown will fit a Stringer, Cobra or Super Cobra mount. Good luck with parts on the early stuff.

 

I would use a sealer that is not permanent. A polyurethane sealer is going to be too strong, what if later you take it apart and the rubber boot rips?

I have one of these and I probably used Black RTV.

Today, I might use something like DAP kitchen and bath clear caulk, dries clear and like soft rubber. Also can get exterior clear caulk.
I have used that to seal some leaky windows where glass meets wood rabbit frames.

The screws secure this well, but you need a very light weight sealer. Even a rubber cement might work ok.

 

There is a low adhesive sealant used for these transom seals, probably an RTV, though it also could be a polyurethane. All the manufactures have a rebadged product they sell for their seals.
