diesel and water tank materials and volumes

    Hi,
    wondering what would be enough volume in diesel and water tanks for a 42ft steel yacht. I'm intending to go offshore.
    2 options with my diesel, either mild steel or stainless. any ideas on what is best and what gauge steel and stainless steel should i use in the diesel and water tanks?
    any help would be much appreciated.

    It's not that simple.. lot of variables to consider.
    How long periods out?
    How many onboard? (1 female=3 male in water consumption)
    Having tight time limits?
    Fridge, Watermaker etc

    Thanks Teddy,
    So i guess if I want to offshore (ie round the world) I need to have a watermaker? people onboard would range from 2 to 6 probably. There is a fridge installed.

    I've seen it said where welded stainless tanks were limited to 20 gallons because the welding caused brittleness and then flexing caused cracks.
