I am still an undergraduate student studying Idustrial Design. I wish to get a masters degree in Naval Architecture. Do any of you know if it's possible for me to qualify for a school if i have good grades? Naval Architecture degrees are not available in my country.

Just write/apply direct to the Uni's you have identified. It's that simple. Only they can tell you.

However, if you do not have sufficient maths or basic engineering, you will fall short, or seriously struggle.

If your goal is to be a naval architect, then do a bachelors degree not a masters. A Masters will only focus (in general) on a subject in more depth that you studied as an undergraduate NA.

Well that is very true Mr. Ad Hoc. Oh, and thanks for replying. Before i chose to study Industrial Design i was going to study Mechanical Engineering. I do not regret studying Industrial Design, but i want to focus my future career on the manufacturing and hull design of watercraft.

There are some master courses specifically in yacht design. I saw three in Italy mainly concentrating on aesthetically aspects, and one in UK for more technical side. Naval Architecture is more general science and if You want to design yachts You might not need to study probabilistic stability or loads on offshore drilling rigs.

Meanwhile, no course only will make good professional in boat design. Boating experience is essential, construction experience, apprenticeship with right design team. If You have those plus formal training, then You can succeed.

Thank you very much Alik for the suggestions. I really appreciate them.

In which case forget doing a masters. Just go work for a shipyard/boatyard that is very busy. You will only learn how to build a boat by working in a yard and actually being there with the fabricators.

Yes. I guess the best thing i can do right now is to self educate myself through books and try to interact with professionals like yourself on great forums like this one. Thanks again Ad Hoc.

University of British Columbia

We at UBC have a Master's program in naval architecture that is designed for students who have completed a bachelor's degree in some other but related field (typically Mechanical Engineering.) This means that our Master's is actually rather like some other school's Bachelor's, rather than being a first step to a research degree.

I can't say whether your Industrial Design degree will qualify you for acceptance, but we would be happy to look at your data to help make that determination.

The UBC M.Eng in Naval Architecture is a 12 month program of study, including two classroom terms and an industrial internship.

Hi Chris! Unfortunately i think i am not going to be able to qualify for a masters on Naval Architecture. I have a 3.63 score, but i do not have sufficient maths on my program to be considered. Well, thanks anyway for your comment.
