I think the designer never put his foot on a boat. But is good with computer.

I want a RC one for my pond. I think there are some good ideas here, but designer has no clue of CG, waves, wind etc... Anyway, I thought of Pod idea to isolate engine noise from hull of boat and make engine swap easier. Also with electric engines, get rid of rudders. But more issues than worth trouble. The structure would have be tremdously strong to prevent it being torn off.
But anyway, put this puppy in the ocean and it is going to be a rough ride.

I went through the entire thing trying to figure out how it was going to take off. Very disappointed!

I'm sure the designer had a great laugh at the expense of the judges. If he see's this thread he'll have a great laugh at our efforts to treat this thing seriously. For God's sake keep it quiet out there and save some beer for when I stop throwing up!

A perfect example of what people call a "design" ! But that is just a nice drawing, a conglomerate of unrealistic phantasies, and never a design. But İ must say Richard was right, the LED s are impressıve.

Constructive, hardly so, but certainly a "pretty" piece of design idea....I still like the look of it, unfortunately too many of us think practically....our left side of the brain is asleep.

I love seeing peoples ideas, even if totally inpractical, to either build or sail.

I checked up the credentials of some of the panel of experts; here they are -

International Design Awards (IDA) ... distinguished panel of judges ... comprised of 50 members, includes; Qingyun Ma, Dean of Architecture, University of Southern California; Gwynne Pugh, Pugh+Scarpa Architects; Kahi Lee, Host, HGTV's "Design on a Dime" and Style Network's "My Celebrity Home”; Rido Busse, Chairman, German Industry and Trade Board; John Dunnigan, Chair, Department of Furniture, Rhode Island School of Design; and Brandusa Niro, Editor-in-Chief and Founder, Fashion Week Daily; and other leaders and editors in the design fields.

It’s heavily biassed towards artistry and style, but at least one member has built stuff. Don’t see any transport specialists let alone boat designers or builders. Perhaps I go into business as a dress designer.

Paddler, Unfortunately we think of designers as someone that can design something we can make, others obviously see design simply for its art form, the design shown certainly is artistic, it looks pretty, and as we all know is totally impossible to work, but that seems irrelevant in todays fancy world of computer generated "things".

I still like the look of it.......

Looking for constructive criticism? That is why I've stayed away, couldn't think of any. Ok, I relent, it does have a bow pulpit.

Sometimes the King is naked. It's just more honest to say so.

There seems to be some confusion about what designers do, or at least it varies from trade to trade. This may stem from the fact that the design process as a separate science was first formally recognised in the building trade which was then adopted by others with entirely different structures and traditions.

In high-tech industries like mine designers do the itsy-bitsy detail work, although many of them were highly talented and artistic. In the rag trade a designer is top dog and cloud dweller all rolled into one.

The designers who collect these awards don't seem to bear any responsibility except to make it striking and pretty. Who hands out cash for these panels qualified only to judge style for designs that are little more than pretty pictures, anyhow? Bet it comes from our pockets.

What else do you expect when the competition judges are totally unqualfied to judge a design for a boat. Even when the design is judged by qualfied judges the result can still be ridiculous. I entered a design competition for a small trailerable boat two of the main criteria were a trailing weight of less than 1000 pounds and a draft of less than 1 foot. The winner weighed 1700 pounds and the runner up had a draft of 17 inches. Go figure!!
The design (if it can be called one) is a total nonsense. The draft would preclude it entering any small boat harbour, the sail area is such that its SA/Disp ratio would be lower than a Tahiti Ketch which hardly moves in anything but a gale. The glass areas would be stove in by the first serious wave and would sink the boat. This is a modern day exercise in style with a total lack of substance in real design. It is a laughable caricature!!!

    designs needs to be pretty.
if those designs are actually practical or even working as intended or working at all is of secondary interest.... this is valid for almost any trade.

in vienna one could study architecture at 2 totally different universitys:
one is of course the Tenchnical University and the other one is the so called 'Angewandte Kunstakademie' (academy of arts).
guess where the fokus of those 2 schools lie?

while the architect on the technical university is taught a considerable amount of static and construction basics it is ridicously neglected up to a necessary minimum on the artists scchool.
both are qualified architects after finishing their respective schools and let loose on civilazition.

the good thing about architects though is that without additional qualification the statics have to be done by a certified civil engineer.
so none of the artistic nonsense produced sometimes by this 'artist-architects' is actually going to be build....

If I offered a building design to that panel of judges that could not be built or was impossible to access they would be all over it in a New York second! But show them a ridiculous boat and suddenly they lose their ability to think in any terms except whether it's a pretty picture. They voted for the graphics, not the design.
