A cost limit was part of the Sonder Class rule, back in the day.

It has produced some really nice and elegant boats, I have to say.
I don't wish to further hack Doug's thread about IMOCA Open 60 boats, will just place this link about the Sonder Class for informative purposes: http://www.sonderklasse-yachten.de/sonderclasskurz.html
Then we can make a new thread about it, if necessary.

    Cheers

Doug, i wonder how they derive the advantage of lift vs heeling moment...
    Thinking out loud here:
if the force created by the lift is decomposed into 2 components, one athwartship and one vertical, the athwartship one is participating in the heeling moment but the vertical one is not, this would be the one that pushes the boat out of the water.
Moreover, the moment created by that athwartship component is proportional to it's distance from the center of moment, meaning that the lift up close to the hull is not effective as heeling moment but quite effective at pushing up.
It would also mean that the advantage would increase as the foil is canted further, i.e. as the athwartship component is getting shorter and the vertical one is getting longer.
    What do you think?

Totally disagree. Look what happened to the volvo and other classes they have restricted and stimied innovation and lateral thinking.

Apply the same logic to the last AC and if they had off restricted it to a maximum $20m dollars would we have seen the boats that just raced. Also its not the cost thats is reducing sponsorship. Its the low spectator following of the one class races. Lots of comments the last V round the world was more interesting and had a bigger following than the Volvo.

Sponsors are targeting the masses not the individual boat s, owners or races. If the boats are all the same = poor attendances at the port stop overs poor discussions and poor exposure rates. Who wants to travel and see 4=6 boats that look all the same at dockside or on the tracker. The whole ideal at being at the viewing area, tracking them on the tracker is to compare different boats, designs, innovations with the the varying race results, causing discussions, thoughts with discussions, arguments on forums, in club conversations, at the bars which usually refer to the boats by the sponsors names.
This is called exposure. Exposure means = product knowledge awareness, = desirability = must have = buying patterns = sales = sponsors profits graphs rising.

The best idea is to maitain the status quo and do what the ISAF new hadicap system is doing.

Just read between the lines re what Wild Oats X1 owner comments are. With all his big spend and all the lastest go fast tech they have altered his handicap and blown his handicap sky high and in his words it almost made impossible for him to win the double. Thus throwing open the handicap class to all the reasonably inexpensive and expensive designs boats to well sailed vessels.

If he does win the double imagine the discussions on this thread alone not to mention the SH thread.

Thats got to be good for every body instead of saying the maximum entry value on any boat shall be X amount of Dollars and elliminating them or having a one class design.

From the spectators point of view it increase exposure and attractiveness, followings to the race as friends, relatives, bussiness associates are motivated to follow their mates race as he loud mouths he now has a chance with full enthusiasium.

His club mates that have not entered previously start thinking Hey you only got third in the club champs and we got second. Hence they are motivated to enter when otherwise in all probability they would not.

The sponsors dream, attractiveness grows with numbers in the race and increased exposure, with increased numbers with the interest and diversafication of the race or regatta.
