ice class containership

    It's true!
    I watched a documentary on a Russian ice breaking super tanker.
    When the going got too thick, it pulled out then reversed in and began shredding ice with it's azipods.
    It was very accurate and could target individual stubborn lumps of ice for special attention.
    The ice does not build up along sides as with a forward traveling breaker, occasionaly causing them to become wedged. The munched ice dissapears under the ship with the flow of water.
    Imagine a 17 megawatt garden mulcher and you get the idea
    Definitely a weapon of mass destruction.

    No kidding.. The bow is optimised for economy in open water and the stern fot ice breaking. Think it merely as a double ender than conventional ship. For serious ice breaking the ships hull slides over the ice and the weight of the ship breaks the ice, then the propellers grinds the ice to smaller pieces..
