And, it seems it's done by a team of two. I'd love these guys to make a film of my favourite sci-fi book, "The Cyberiad". And they could do the music too...

There seems to be a strong mutual attraction between music and programming. Both use code for knowledge representation and require close attention to the rules if you want to make anything that works. In high school, my physics teacher went out and bought a Radio Shack TRS-80 with his own money and put it the back of the class. It was the first computer in any public high school in Tennessee. He also started the program where you could buy a can of soup at the grocery store and a few cents went to school computers. His wife managed the grocery store. We got 30 computers that way in the next two years. Anyway, I spent a lot of time on the thing, and the first useful progam I wrote was called Strings. It modelled the guitar and converted programs to music. Files were stored on cassette tapes anyway, so not a big deal. The teacher had asked me to do something that he could show to the school board. He was trying to get get computers into classes as a general tool and not as some silly toy or lab experiment.

I can only assume they can scan sheet music and play. That tech has to have been done by now. If I understand the short description correctly, not only are the harmonics of the instrument modeled, but so are the room acoustics.

Pipe Dream is my favorite from Animusic. In 2006 it was voted one of the best 3D animation projects ever.

However, INTEL was inspired by Animusic to make a real version of Pipe Dreams

 

The numbers are humbling: $160,000 to build that in 90 days.

 

It also looks like an excellent project to involve some final year engineering students as part of their industry involvement.

 

The actuators, sufficiently fast, strong and small for such tiny robotic fingers and joints might be a problem.
I guess it can be done, but the first models will look much less romantic.

Anyways, great imagination!
