Oftentimes we don't recognize a blessing when it first appears. A flat tire can save your life if it keeps you from catching your flight only to learn the plane you were to be on later crashed. Or going deaf can be a blessing. It all depends.

I was blind for three days once, years ago after chemical burns in a auto race pits incident. It was very frustrating the first day, wondering if I'd ever see again. Much the same on the second day, but later that night I heard my dad's footsteps coming down the hall at the hospital. I recognized his gate. I soon started keying in on things I never noticed before, like the different sounds the rain drops outside the window made, as they landed on various things. On the last day, I was able to recognize people by their sounds and was able to address them before they said a word. As the doctor was about to remove my bandages, I heard him open a pair of scissors, to which I quickly replied,"be careful with those scissors". I'll never forget the lessons learned in those three days.
