Sail-less sail boat

Several years ago, I saw a show that features a fairly large sailboat that had a thick mast, but no sails. The mast was some type of wind turbine or whatever. Does anyone know about that boat, when it happened or its name? Would appreciate any input. You can respond directly to cougarmarineusa@rgv.rr.com

Flettner rotor, look it up on wiki.

Edit to add, though wind provided the driving power to the hull, the rotor was driven by a motor, so it is not a true "wind powered" vessel.

 

Ah yes, the Magnus effect, but the motor used to drive the rotors would have driven the hull faster.

 

Not on the Baden-Baden, they were only 37 kW each on a 100m, 2000 ton ship. Now on some of the smaller demo platforms.....

The power required to drive the Rotor is close to nothing compared with the power provided by the Rotor.

Gee! Thanks everybody, especially you, jehardiman. I write articles for magazines regarding boats, boating safety and other stuff. Had a great idea for an article about the evolution of boating since some guy crawled onto a drifting log, up to now. But then it's going into what to expect between now and 2030.
