Timber to fiberglass

    I am about to start restoring and refitting a 26 foot fiberglass yacht.I would like to epoxy timber decking strips to the existing fiberglass decks.Can this be done, could somebody please give me some advise.Thanks Kevin

    You can do it with thin strips; about 1/4" (6 mm) or so. Caulk them with Lifecaulk or something similar. I'm doing sonmething similar in a refit of an older boat.

    I too, have on occasion been asked to skin a 'glass deck with teak or pitch pine,"for the look" I've bedded in 3M 5200, epoxy and other materials. The 3M 5200 held the best, was the most trouble and cost the most, epoxy a close second. Use as thick of strips of lumber as you can, because you'd be surprised how quickly you can wear through a 1/4" decking material, especially if not a good grade of VG teak.

    I recently created a deck where there was none on a 'glass boat with a laminate of 2 layers of 1/8" plywood on a 30% bias with a 1/4" layer of hardwood bedded in 3M 4200 (it may have to come off some day) and fastened from below. This was over some light weight ring framing.
