Gel over paint

I know you are not supposed to do it but what happens to the paint and gel if you do?
I have some repairs to do on a customers boat that has had previous repairs and I am not sure if all the repairs were done with gel? This is a west coast boat with several colors and fades with clear gel on top.

 

It will depend on the paint under it. The problems would be: lack of proper adhesion and the paint lifting by the styrene in the gelcoat. Are you sure it is clear gel and not a clear coat of some kind?

 

The original gel from the manufacture is clear gel. Most all west coast boat manufactures use clear gel in the mold. Also out of mold repairs.

 

Is there no clear gel over the repairs?

 

There is clear over the previous repairs. I can not tell if they are paint or gel. That is the reason for my question.

 

That's a tough situation. Can you do the repair with paint?

 

I can but they want gel.
