Sandblasting from the water line on down only.

Hi All,

We're sandblasting the bottom of my 50' steel ketch this weekend. One question we haven't solved is how to mask for sandblasting. We want to stop at the boot stripe. What will stand up to the abrasive forces of an industrial compressor?

Other questions about sand blasting job - is it worth re-using blast media? if so, what to filter/screen with?

I think tombstone makers & those making decorative stones with designs & lettering use a type of rubber for stencils. The gloves in a cabinet blaster are also a type of rubber.

Shot blasting may be preferable to sand. Personally I would not reuse the blasting medium.

Others will give more & probably better advice so hang in there.

...additional question: what grit sand to use?

suggestions? 20, 30, or 60 are my choices.

just get someone to hold a piece of ply up, you cant really mask
what size nozzle and how many cu/ft min is your compresser. out of interest, used to do all my own in the days I built in steell, had a 6 pot coventry climax, 2 pots high stage and 4 low stage, was beast, ran a 3/8 disposable venturi nozzle, 48 sq feet, in 12 mins with sand, the key is this, have JUST enough sand, should be a haze only , otherwise you just waste it, good luck
