In Hillsborough County they built a bypass canal for flood control.

To get voters to support it they promoted it as a great new area for recreation fishing etc.

Once they got it built they fenced the whole thing off with floats and cables and chain link fence.

    What a deal!

In the 1500's explorers went up the Hillsborough River as far as Temple Terrace in search of timber for ships' masts. Can't happen today since the river was dammed. Locals blew up the dam once so when it was rebuilt it came with guard tower.

    What a deal!

There was a project to build an elevated super highway across the saharah desert. Abandoned! The Bedoins, 10s of thousands blocked workmen to the point it became impossible. They were that impatient to fish off of it!

,Small loans/morgages are acceptiable if financially planned well. Example after selling out in NFLD (home and small buisnesses)we arrived in Nova Scotia with enough funds to build the workshop (my tools came with me) and house (in that order). We purchased the land (cash) some 4 years prev. After building the house we were cash depleated and i was not happy the dam thing had eaten all my money and was not even paying it's way in operational costs. After working the numbers, we decided to make it pay for itself by becoming an income property. The problem we had to borrow and the planned B&B generates 99% of it's income 7 months of tourist season with only 3 months high season. We offset this by including a one bedroom yearly leased apt. plus and here's the kicker,we had the bank give us a secured line of credit to draw on instead of an actual morgage. This allowed us to have great flexiability in our payments. A plus feature-- During off season or any poor buisness years we simply had to pay the interest.($300 per month We could do this for years on end if needed) In actuality we didn't pay a cent from our personal pockets-- the apt. generated more than twice that amount in monthly income. So I along with a labourer helper did the construction( payback from the shop in prefabing) and upon completion came the furnishing--not a small expense. While talking it over one night, this ad from a big retailer came on TV-- furnish your house -no payments -no interest for one full year-- Christ did i hear that right-- phoned them up --got the deal--furnished the whole B&B including the apt.-- with their furniture--their delivery--their labour to unpack and place the furniture -- and paid it all off, made the min. bank loan payments, plus a bit of fun money to boot, within the first season of house generating income. I again babble on this only to give example of one way it can be done, simply make the money work for you in the same manner as the banks make your money work for them. Houses-boats-trucks-vans-(cars are useless)can all be put to work. My home built motorhome has two big rear doors and a 3ft.x16ft centered hallway plus a 6x8ft. rear floor to ceiling area and removeable furniture to handle building materials. Yes it's my construction truck as well-- gotta pay for itself. My new boat when completed will do part time charter. It's just a mindset how can I make it payback.---.

    Viking North,
If you cut a square hole in the bow on one side, frame it in good. Fix an aluminum or stainless plate to bolt over the hole, you'll have a lumber schooner, or sloop, ketch. Beach her, open the hatch, run the timbers, lumber inside. Bolt up drag yourself off with the stern anchor you thoughtfully set out before beaching! ...:D

Nope. My dad and his pals were partners in an ancient lumber schooner they used as a yacht. When I was small. The plate was iron. We used it as a window at anchor sometimes.

Neat experience-if that old rig could talk .Just remembered something--there used to be a logging operation in the forest behind me -- a sawmill and wharf on the beach in front of me where they would dock and load lumber schooners outbound for Europe. At low tide you can see the remains of old waterlogged slabs from the mill. That buisness was big all the way from Newfounland down the eastern seaboard. Maine possibly the most active area. Alot of my NFLD ancestors were ship builders and operators and i recall stories of storm damaged flooded lumber schooners staying afloat-pumped out and continuing the delivery.Their most dreaded cargo was the return trip loaded with salt from Spain -- salt plugged the pumps --and untold numbers sunk. Typical big schooner or square rigger trip out of NFLD was to Europe with cargo of dried cod or lumber--salt return or Down south (Islands or Brazil with dried cod), guano outbound usually to Europe the salt back to NFLD. One of my ancestors Capt'n Jimmy Pike ran a big square rigger for Munns (I think) out of St. John's for some 30 yrs. Merchant shipping was big buisness for the Rock in those days --member of the top ten of the world. Now it's the second largest oil producer in Canada--how times have changed.

P.S. A funny thought just hit me --wonder how many little Newfoundlanders (relatives) are running around Spain-Portugal-or Brazil- :D
