    54 40 or Fight

The 1844 Democratic presidential candidate James K. Polk ran on a platform of taking control over the entire Oregon Territory and used the famous campaign slogan, "Fifty-four Forty or Fight!" (after the line of latitude serving as the northern boundary of Oregon at 54°40'). Polk's plan was to claim and go to war over the entire territory for the United States.

Polk won the election with a popular vote of 1,337,243 to Henry Clay's 1,299,068 (the electoral vote yielded Polk 170 votes vs. 105 for Clay).

    Better call Saul then :p

I couldn't tell you how they split here. There are many on both sides of our Federal Parliament.

I was worried about marrying one, then realized that if I didn't own anything
except a computer and maths books, she couldn't sue me for much.
It's been nearly 30 years, so I might be safe now :)

LOL, that's considered to be a very offensive way to refer to an Australian aborigine.

I once called myself a crow-eater to some Americans and was greeted with
some very stern looks for some reason. It happens to be a nick-name for South
Australians but something offensive or untoward in the US.

QUOTE=BPL Then people decided they wanted ....... healthcare. Ample resources turned into supporting much overhead.

Soon you will realize what it is health care managed health care from public administration.
    Waste, inefficiency and rampant amorality.
In a few years you will be have an untouchable caste of thieves.
Health will capture a huge amount of money.
With public money you will create a public lobby in the lobby.
BETTER, BUT MUCH BETTER, GIVE to all a LOW COST INSURANCE.
when the state becomes to manager as owner, devours morality, citizens and democracy.

    That's Italy.

That's one meaning we use too.

No, there was something racially offensive about it, according to one guy. Something about Jim Crow, or the diets of poor black people.
Mind you, some of these people found "damn" and "hell" offensive.

It's a recent (last 15 years) new social developement in US. The right to "not be offended". It doesn't exist under law, but there are recent (15 yrs) court precedents giving it legal weight. Woe be us.

Thats it--thats all you need to be president of the USA, a good campaign slogan, that seems to do the trick.

" I dont like his hair but Oh he is clever with words"

Heres one I made earlier' 'Vote for me I will stuff up things you never thought of"

Or --'if you think he stuffed up wait till you see what I can do'

Thing is if some one stood up and said' I will take away all your money, increase taxes, move retirement age to 80' Some people will vote for it.

Peoples thoughts and wants vary so wildly that it is impossible to please all the people all the time which is why a paradise does not exist, but only in the mind, and why there can be no heaven.

To sit on a beach reading a book is absolute heaven for some--for me it would be hell. And I mean really really hell.

For me living in a scrap yard with an oxyacetylene cutter that never runs out of oxygen, Oh shear heaven.

The idea that one man can make all the problems go away is nonsensical. Admittedly, when I skinned my knee at age 4, my mother COULD make it all better ! But in proportion to the scale of these problems, no, one person is not the answer. Mind you, giving one person free rein can really stuff things up. Think Hitler !

    Hows the quote go?
"Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it!"?
I expected foresight and historical perpespective from newly elected pres Obama, former college professor.
Instead, he launched into his obsessive agenda of socialized medicine. The stiff resistance he encountered seems to have unsettled him earned his emnity.
I'm VERY concerned his outrageous spending is his vengeance.
Instead of slowing down or stopping the rush to ruin, he has accelerated it!
I don't trust him. Once trust is broken, almost impossible to repair. Trust is Humpty Dumpty for real.

The Heritage Foundation is hardly a hotbed of RINO's... and that's where the original proposal came from.
When the Consumer Choice Health Security Act was introduced in 1993, it was sponsored by Don Nickles, Orrin Hatch and Connie Mack, and cosponsored by 22 of the remaining 40 Republican Senators:

    Bob Bennett
    Hank Brown
    Conrad Burns
    Dan Coates
    Tad Cochran
    Paul Coverdell
    Larry Craig
    Bob Dole
    Lauch Faircloth
    Judd Graig
    Chuck Grassley
    Jesse Helms
    Kay Bailey Hutchinson
    Dirk Kempthorne
    Trent Lott
    Richard Lugar
    Frank Murkowski
    Alan Simpson
    Bob Smith
    Ted Stevens
    Malcom Wallop

How many of those names do you recognize, Hoyt? Face it: if they're all Republicans In Name Only, there's no such thing as a real Republican.:)

And of course, there are a lot of things besides drinking that cause liver damage. So I take it you'd like to see death panels decide who deserves to live, and who we should let die?

Presidential politics is similar to American idol. People choose a candidate they like based on the campaign show. Character assassination instead of issues. Huffing and puffing and lipstick and party. Ridiculous. People actually think the president is going to fix everything himself and quickly.
2 years is spent telling people what they want to hear to get elected
Then they have 3 years to learn the system and try and do something.
After 1 people start complaining that there was no magic fix
They spend the last year of the job campaigning again. And it repeats.

    Canada is doing well.
