I dated a Chinese woman long ago when I was at CU. She was adamant that China would conquer the world. She said the US makes plans for the next 4 years, Europe makes plans for the next 10, China makes a plan for the next 500 years and sticks to it. She was convinced that China will someday govern the world. Always did kinda freak me out but she was cute, and any plans she had for world domination would have to wait till morning.

In an earlier post I put "unfair" competition. There is no "unfair" in competition only"dificult" competition when an opponent seems to have a temporary advantage. Entropy! China will become rich and living standards improve.
Then 1 Chinese yuan = 0.158331 U.S. dollars or 1$ = 6.34 yuan won't be true. Maybe ratio is reversed.
My point is entropy. Things level out in time. Things cycle.
Only CHANGE is forever in physical world.

Soon China will have to deal with the same cycle and challenges as every developed country. Health Care, rule of law, retirement, work safety..........

Looks like they are presently dealing with a real estate bubble.

Years ago I was dating a Chinese-Canadian girl in Vancouver, BC. She went to extraordinary lengths to keep anyone she knew from finding out, because she said her parents would disinherit and disown her if they discovered she was seeing a white man.

In case anyone thinks that racism is something unique to white Americans...:)

One of my wife's brothers and one sister were against our marrying. Fortunately I had approval of her parents. My wife wasn't a minor and didn't require legal permission. But I (wise once or twice in my life), pursued old school "asking permission" to court with announced intention of eventually marrying, and later asked blessing and permission to marry. Then legally i had to obtain Mexican govt permission to marry. Permission for foreign relations. It was worth every bit of it. I'm very happy.

Not what I'd call 'free'... seems like a heavy price to pay. I wouldn't take the job if someone offered it to me.

I'm not so sure that China will follow the standard paradigm when dealing with its growing pains. Something tells me the Chinese will present there own solutions as they always have and those solutions will be fundamentally different than our might have been in the same circumstances.

What does concern my is that in a world of shrinking resources what are some countries willing to do to ensure there own survival, cooperation isn't exactly our strong point and it wont take that long before a wealthy country like China steps up to the plate with a bat we've never seen before. I'm not an advocate of the gigantic amounts of money we spend on so called "defense" but I am all for being able to field a healthy offense when called for. My take is that the theatre of the future will be manned mainly by robots and drones.

If they gave it up, you can't claim.
If anyone sponsors you, they are responsible for any costs (extra health, gov't assistance, legal fees, debts, etc) that you may incur. Not that you would, just fyi.

$20k in BC is not even a down payment anywhere near any town. Hornby Island starts at $250k and its a pita to get to any town.

China's one kid policy has doomed them..as Chinese want boys, the girl fetuses are terminated and there is a huge shortage of women already.

The smart and/or good looking women leave.

Their population will crash at some point in time.

India is having the same problem (aborted females, I mean). I doubt it'll get to the point of a population 'crash' in either country, though. At most it'll level out growth -- and scarcity might raise the value of women. And by the way, there are minorities in China which are exempt from the one child rule. So limiting births of the majority might someday change the political and cultural status quo.

Historically, war has been the traditional remedy for an excess of virile young men without wives...
