Northern Italy is one of the most productive, innovative, educated regions in the world. The Chinese cant duplicate this. They may be able to purchase Italian companies, but they will never be able to purchase the Italian creative mind.

    Hi Gian,
Thanks for your many excellent posts.
the phrase bad money drives out good rang a bell in my memory, and I thought "Kensian economics?" But I couldn't remember exactly. Economics class was a LONG TIME ago. So, I looked it up, so not to embarass myself. Glad I did because I remembered wrong. It's Gresham's Law.

I don't think Gresham's law was intended in the way you used it. Though the "unfairness" of competition between low wage economies and affluent economies is a world feature we're well aware of in USA. The best defense, IMHO, is rapid deveopement of new techs. So that by the time China or whomever gets tooled up to produce stolen tech, it's already obsolete!

The best defense is education and laws which promote entrepreneurship. A country like Italy is run by the same generation of big business interests who rescued Italy from WWII. This cartel stifles entrepreneurship and protects the old generation of power brokers.
Italy is to "OLD" , Time to change this.

    A small example.
Most beautiful tiles of the world were made in northern Italy.
Chinese copied technology and invade low-cost markets with our designs.
Tile companies are in crisis, and dreadful lay off "creatives" who invented the style.

    End of creativity, companies closed.

Here's what the Chinese do, that they sell in Italy at a lower price on the same raw material.

Yes, but Italy still has a monopoly on Italian marble. Create demand for marble rather than ceramic tile floors! :D

Or is the marble almost depleted?

Bad money drives out good is used as a way to say, with irony.
    I mentioned Sir Gresham ironically.

To you all. I SURE do trust - you all - are re-reading & re-reading all that is being said in here. I'm as sure as anyone (that can't compete with y'all's knowledge) can be - that - if we'all took the time to read & re-read - etc - all that's being said in this forum we would be wiser by far.

There are many 'big understatements' being made in here. Far to self centered for me to understand however I do congratulate all of you for your wisdom. Hell guys, I'm 72 in Feb - dyslexic (big time) - have a $ 3/4 mil K property for sale (that I don't own a cent on) & all I want to do - is go sailing - before I get to old to remember what it is that I wanted to do. Darn - what did I say Nah - got 15 years left yet - maybe????

Remember now - ah - whether any of you like it or not - the fact is - China owns the vast majority of the worlds economies. Like it or not. Especially those who know how to look things & people up - (no name - no dog-tag - no pack-drill - eh V) on the net - go do it. If I'm wrong - I'll sail over there & work for a year for free to do what you want - to get you to where you want to get-to. Gawd - now there's a liability - if ever there was 1, he!!

Great conversation thread though. Ciao, james (ex-pat Canuck) in OZ & wana-be-sailor.

"yoba" or 'barnacle' Which is better for you - as it's a greater compliment!!!

Well over 70% of "ITALIAN MARBLE" comes from Australia - where ever the hell that is - some 3rd world place down near - the other 'pole'. I live in the area they mine it & send it from - so I'm sure of my comment. Ciao, mex/Flo guy, from down-under, james

Far to self centered for me to understand, James?

I never understood why self interest and self promotion is wrong.
They're elements in american society that think so.
I suppose other people in other nations may also.

Seems to me, when I hear self interest is wrong it's because it conflicts with someone elses self interest. They think it's justice if I bend over and spread cheeks for them.
    I don't think so!
Please explain because undoubtedly I'm very confused and defensive. As in back to the wall and slide fast! :)

I think the people digging it out are of Italian extraction ? North Qld has a lot of Italians. And, as if it matters where it comes from, it's only a rock, it hasn't been lovingly crafted, only cut with a diamond saw ! :D
