We are starting a maritime center in Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico and have begun research on Mayan canoa designs, both ocean going and river-canal. The Mayans are recorded as traveling as far as Venezuela to the South (over 1200 miles straight or 2000 miles along the coast) and as far North from Tulum as the Tabasco coast of Mexico.
This unresearched area is, as is the case in much of the "New World", an important historic addendum to migration and the intermixing of different culltures in this hemisphere.
Anybody interested in getting involved, either by correspondance or coming here to assist in the research please just write a few lines of inquiry.
    My name is Ross.

    Ross,

I am a little south of you in Belize. You have a very interesting proposal. I am aware of very little research in the area of Maya seafaring, although their waterborne commerce was very extensive.
There are still some active dory (dugout) craftsmen here in Belize. The best of these passed away two years ago.
I do recall an article which appeared in the Journal of Navigation some years ago which attempted to explain Maya navigation.
I am interested in what you are attempting and will pass on what information I can find here in Belize
