I bought a model multicopter about 7 years ago,and was surprised at the amount it could lift.

Then I got a much larger motor and suitable prop,and measured the lift...then i calculated with an amount of motors etc I could go for a flight.
Then I thought it may not be such a good idea,but was going to build it even to hover over water or stay at low heights.

Was talked out of it by the girlfriend at the time..

Then some German guys did it last fall

Air pressures/lift etc... don't scale in a linear form, neither do engine weights to horsepower ratios. That said stability is the big problem. Your girlfriend probably saved your life...

Dauphin: I don't think she saved my life,all I wanted to do was lift off a couple feet.
Had found some helicopter data,pored over it and made estimations based upon that-if it hadn't lifted off I'd have added more motors.
And ducted them.
IIRC it needed 50 or 55 kw..I planned to not use strictly batteries.

Stabilization,I looked into model gyroscopic multicopter electronics,and decided that since I didn't want to spin, or even travel around that a simple dihedral would work.

I was too busy to build it anyways,and didn't want to fly around the country,just to float around a little.

 

Last night's Top Gear (Original UK) featured a race between this and a Skoda rally car...


Car lost of course (it usually does) but not by much.

Race started with Chopper lift off and ended with Parachute landing. Pretty neat stuff. I think I would have to get a 'Nad transplant to dare flying in one but it is pretty cool to watch.

 

I have seen a couple of unedited videos of some of the flights, it doesn't look all that stable, kind of like strapping a rocket on your pack. It doesn't provide a lot of lift, it needs a lot of speed to fly. Basically it is falling down and jets just postpone inevitable.

 

He's a surprisingly level headed guy. I've seen him about eight times since he started this project.

More like strapping FOUR rockets on your pack!
