Historical multihulls

I'm still avoiding Facebook, what sort of boats? Are they Golden Oldies racers or are people posting cruisers?

That's nice.

We seem to attract a fair amount of kayakers, I think they can relate to the niche cruising trimarans can fill.

That's also a pretty good niche in the rocks for mooring your Nicol, Cav?

That is in the Copeland Island chain in BC which is popular with kayakers and beach campers. We decided to park in a "garage" and sail the dink through the islets.

It is hard to see but on the starboard deck is a heron that decided to commandeer the boat while we were away.

SCALARE 250

A foldable kajak catamaran from 1962 !!!!
The biggest and heaviest collapsable/fold cat ever.
According " specialists" only four have survived--55 years !
Un-be-liv-able.
Made in GDR--- East Germany, behind the iron curtain. For export only.
Obvisously few units stayed in East Germany and have been loved--the people there had nearly nothing.
This sort of craft , the catamaran , was new, so the boat was unique , furthermore of good quality , also well thougt out , high-end , and it fit the needs of campers . It was the biggest demountable sailboat. Frames and skins in the boot , mast, stringers and bridgedck battens on cartop. Fast and , .... a thrill.
A pittoresque forgotten milestone --- for miles no one needs anymore. Car toppable Grp cats came six years later, but NOT behind the iron curtain. There they came never.

This one is in very good to excellent condition, probably the best existing example , hence the price.
A collector's price ?

Btw., note outboard bracket and circular bridedeck centerboard.

Faltboot
In Germany these boats have a more than 110 uears long history.
These recreational crafts were and are cheap, nearly " Rucksack boats " . They have crossed the atlantik several times , they have been paddled from Germany to Australia, they have been in the arctic , they have been used for military raids ( Trimaran pioneer and "Wing Commander" Nobby Clarke in WWII; Falkland war; under the radar), they have been nearly everywhere.

They are still popular.

Since several years now i' m thinking about hanging the skeleton of a faltboat under the ceiling of my living room.
Imagine --the inspiring well shaped wooden hand crafted "hull" seeing everyday.

No, i'm not the seller.
I think that the SCALARE is worth to have a closer look at it.

pogo

P.S.
The SCALARE 250 comparable with the rare 1954 french ! Ford Comète , or the nowadays rare Seabee ?

Certainly Scalare 250 is not the biggest collapsible/fold cat, but possibly heaviest.
This russian boat from 1977 is slightly longer (5.5 meter) and carries more sails (16 sq. m.). However, its weight is only 85 kg due to light alloy construction.
Here are some photos and frame of the hull view.

Late onset trimaranitis

One suggestion I can think of is to relocate and set up your job in the area you want to move to first. Then start looking for boats, the area you talked about will have more to choose from and the logistics will be much simpler. Instead of having to change everything the boat is all you'll have to worry about. Finally if you've only come to the trimaran bug in the last 2 months realize there is nothing wrong with moving on at this stage in the game despite what forum jerks like myself may say. For most people this obsession is a life long condition for which there is no cure. Late onset trimaranitis could herald other life changes, be open to blondes and red convertibles.... they are easier to find. I'll try to ignore the quest for awhile.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I love it! Living on the dream for 2 years now.....married at 63..2nd time.... (blond dream date)...been looking for a bargain.....Kraken, too small....Buccaneer can't get to the head through the bulkhead....Searunner ....maybe.......Missed the 10k 40' Kelsall by 2 days.....

Yep, Ol' Skippy looked like he was in a phase and indeed he seems to have found other interests.

Sounds like you are on the right path. For bargains don't forget tris like Cross and Tristars (Horstman). Searunners with a bad trunk aren't a bargain. There have been some good bargains on the west coast if you like travel. For the adventurous there are often boats in Mexico too.

Not famous, but unique 1959 glasatron x 1981 so cat.

It's a great little camping trimaran. It's my DIY build.
Interesting thread,
